About This Item

Edinburgh: John Grant,, 1905. The Winchester Edition, considered the most attractive unillustrated edition of Austen's works produced around the turn of the century. First published by Grant Richards in 1898, it received great praise in the press for placing Austen in a setting worthy of her writings. "An air of distinction hovers" among the volumes, wrote one critic in the Dundee Advertiser; "they invite the touch and reprove the hasty hand; and the large [type] and good paper are a pleasure to behold" (23 June 1898). Ten volumes, octavo (205 x 140 mm). Contemporary red half calf, spines with raised bands, compartments lettered and tooled with foliate motif in gilt, red cloth sides, grey endpapers, top edges gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut. Engraved frontispiece of the author in volume I, title pages printed in red and black. Toned spines sometime neatly refurbished, vol. I front hinge cracked, vol. I front free endpaper slightly chipped and almost loose, loss to a few headcaps and lettering of vol. III spine, bindings occasionally marked. A very good set. Gilson E91.

Synopsis

"As the novel opens, Mr Bingley, a wealthy young gentleman, rents a country estate near the Bennets called Netherfield. He arrives in town accompanied by his fashionable sisters and his good friend, Mr Darcy. While Bingley is well-received in the community, Darcy begins his acquaintance with smug condescension and proud distaste for all the 'country' people..." - [*Wikipedia*][1] [1]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pride_and_Prejudice
