Octavo, original publisher's cloth. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper, "C. S. Lewis" and inscribed by him on the final free endpaper with an inscription of his poem The Salamander which was published in the same year (1945) in The Spectator, "The Salamander I stared in to the fire: - blue waves of shuddering hear that rose and fell and blazing ships and binding caves Canyons and street and hills of hell. The presently amidst it all I saw a living creature crawl. Foreword it crept, and shoved its snout Between the bars, and with sad eyes Into my quiet room look out As men look out upon the skies, And from its scalding throat there came A faint voice hissing like a flame;- 'This is the end, the stratosphere, The rim of the world where all life dies. Description:
London: Geoffrey Bles, 1942. First edition of Lewis' classic novel of spiritual conflict, one of his most celebrated works. Octavo, original cloth. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket which is in very good condition. An excellent example. Very rare in this condition. The Screwtape Letters comprises thirty-one letters written by a senior demon named Screwtape to his nephew, Wormwood (named after a star in Revelation), a younger and less experienced demon, who is charged with guiding a man toward "Our Father Below" (Devil / Satan) and away from "the Enemy" (God). Versions of the letters were originally published weekly in the Anglican periodical The Guardian between May and November 1941.

Description:
New York: Macmillan, 1943. Book. Fine Minus. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 9th printing of 1st American Edition. Book is clean, unmarked, spine tight, slightly tanned endpapers, tips with minuscule rubbing and spine ends slightly worn. The dust jacket is price clipped and has loss and chipping at spine ends with about a two inch x 1/3 inch loss at front cover tip. Other small chips at points and some edges. Jacket has a smudge on the front and overall aging. Looks great now in its new shiny plastic cover. Shipping box is suitable for wrapping with a non-price listed purchase order inside along with biodegradable packing. From the jacket, "These brilliant, challenging letters from an elderly devil in hell to his junior on earth are the most vital and original restatement of religious truths produced in our time -- a profound, hard-hitting, provoking, yet truly reverent book.".

Description:
London: Geoffrey Bles: The Centenary Press, 1946. ~Original black cloth, printed label to spine. Mild chipping to spine label. March 1946 printing. Inscription to front free endpaper: 'To Beryl from the Carnalls October 1946'. With loose 2pp. letter, in the same hand, as follows: 'Magdalen College, Oxford. 12.10.1946. Dear Beryl, Many happy returns of - some days ago! I'm afraid that what with one thing and another, we've neglected your birthday very badly. We were so mixed up with my packing, dramatic entertainments and the search for better lodgings for Momma and Auntie, that the day slipped by. It's a bit calmer here, fortunately. / I hope you'll enjoy my tutor's correspondence with the devil. Maybe his inverted preaching is a bit trying. But it's very funny in parts, and, I suppose, instructive. Mr Lewis, by the way, said that he modelled Screwtape on himself. So you know what I have to deal with! / I hope Jackie's doing well at school. Remember me to her…

Description:
London: Geoffrey Bles: The Centenary Press. Eighth printing of the first edition in August of the same year as the first printing. Stated on the verso of the title page: Reprinted with some alterations by kind permission of "The Guardian". 160pp. Black covers, paper label on the spine, no inscriptions, some natural paper ageing. Previous owner's name written neatly on the front free endpaper, very small, light water mark to the top corners of some pages (see photo), easily missed. The original, unclipped dust jacket has black lettering and red borders; blurbs on the front flap, minor general wear at the extremities and small losses to the spine ends, not affecting the lettering. Early copies of this book with the dust jacket are not easy to find because of the flimsy and brittle nature of the jacket, printed during wartime restrictions on paper. This one is now protected by a removable cover. Bibliographic note: the publisher has printed on the dust jacket front flap "Eighth…

Geoffrey Bles, 1942. 1st edition, sixth reprint August 1942, after the first printing that February. Hardcover. Black cloth in near fine condition, tiny extremity rubbing, the spine label perfectly intact with no rubbing. The pages are clean and tidy, just a few small fox spots on the first and last couple of leaves and an occasional spot on a page.
