The classic cautionary tale told in the form of a series of letters from the senior demon, "Screwtape," imparting his tricks of the trade to his nephew and apprentice, "Wormwood." Small 8vo black cloth boards with paper spine label lettered in black and ruled in green; 160 pages. Near fine with minor production error resulting in slight indentation to last few leaves; in near fine, price-clipped dust jacket with only a touch of light foxing and few small tears. Quite scarce in dust jacket, especially one as nice as this.

The Screwtape Letters comprises thirty-one letters written by a senior demon named Screwtape to his nephew, Wormwood (named after a star in Revelation), a younger and less experienced demon, who is charged with guiding a man toward "Our Father Below" (Devil / Satan) and away from "the Enemy" (God). Versions of the letters were originally published weekly in the Anglican periodical The Guardian between May and November 1941.

Original red cloth hard covers, in price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket is toned and shows some shallow loss here and there. Moderate handling and shelf-wear to extremities and edges of covers. Edges and endpapers mildly toned, with old gift inscription to front endpaper scribbled out. Otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Very neat -- a sound and handsome copy. .

The original, unclipped dust jacket has black lettering and red borders; blurbs on the front flap, minor general wear at the extremities and small losses to the spine ends, not affecting the lettering. Early copies of this book with the dust jacket are not easy to find because of the flimsy and brittle nature of the jacket, printed during wartime restrictions on paper. Still, a solid copy of this book that Lewis dedicated to J.R.R. Tolkien.
