Including large woodcut of British coat of arms opposite the title. Printed in English black letter. Re-backed preserving original calf boards; well rubbed; old burn mark or darkened area on front cover. The re-backing extends part way onto the original boards and blends nicely with the old leather; some spots of careful restoration are present on the board edges. A faded early shelf number is hand printed on the fore-edge. The interior is generally clean with occasional brief marginalia in an early hand. A name - "John Byeith" - is neatly written (in the same hand) near the upper edge of the title page. End sheets are renewed in marbled paper. Carefully sealed tear at the bottom of p. 277. The outer edge of some leaves show spots of wear. An interesting compilation of laws and private acts of the English Parliament. [ESTC R232104].

Small ink spot on outer fore-edge of book block; bibliographical note written in an early hand on front blank free fly leaf. Part of Elzevir’s republic series. Contains a collection of writings on Switzerland relating to history, geography, travel etc., including Josias Simmler’s "De Republica Helvetiorum libri duo" (first published 1576), a work by Daniel L’Ermite, and three other works. Three editions were published in 1627. This is the 2nd edition with fleurions on p. 4 and p. 535. [Willems 278; Berghman 1763; Rahir 242].

Engraved title, title vignette, thirty engraved plates (mostly of coins and medallions), three engraved foldout plates, several engravings in the text, vignettes, initials and tail-pieces. Engravings by Pietro Sante Bartoli, Francesco Andreoni and others. In this work, Buonarroti describes the numismatic collection of Cardinal Gaspare Carpegna, for whom he worked as a museum and library curator. Two Works in One small quarto 183x140mm rebound in full brown levant on 4 raised bands with 2 black spine labels gilt and gilt date to foot of spine. Newer edpapers, small bookplate of Alan John Jarvis, [iv]+20pp; [vi]+126+[4]pp Table. Long ownership inscription on back of titlepage (John Thomas 1751) with name repeated at end of 1st work, John Davies on back of 2nd titlepage with a few ink notes by both owners in margins of later pages. Paper browned throughout, edges frayed and cropped at top at end of book.

[xxii], 148, [viii] pages, plus the 13 ephemerides which vary from approximately 28 to 36 pages each, plus a final leaf of errata. The ephemerides themselves were previously printed separately - seven are dtd 1656, five are dtd 1657, and one for the year 1669 is dtd 1669 (clearly a misprint). Condition of the casing is Good- (minus): considerable wear, abbreviated title inked on spine label. Condition of the text is Good: occasional light soiling/foxing or marginal chip/closed tear; text rippled from aging. Previous owner's stamp on endpapers, title page, and three places in text; armorial bookplate of John Earl of Loudoun w/double-headed eagle & motto "I Bide My Time" on front pastedown..

Amsterdam:: for the widow of Joannes van Someren, 1682. Four engraved plates which were used to illustrate Tavernier's 'Les Six Voyages'. Each is loosely attached to a paper backing sheet. Slight darkening and with foxing, but overall are in good condition. The plates include a wizard bringing a small tree to life; a frantic fakir stabbing 13 Dutch sailors to death; a King waiting with bow and arrow, ready to kill a tied up Englishman; and an unlabelled plate, which shows thieves being bricked up in punishment; although strangely, one has been given his pipe to smoke! 170 x 140 mm (6¾ x 5½ inches). Robert Sanderson was a 17th-century English bishop who served as the Bishop of Lincoln. Sanderson was known for his studies in logic whose research was even known to influence Isaac Newton. Author Izaak Walton, wrote a series of biographical 'lives' of notable English figures, wrote one on Sanderson entitled simply 'The Life of Dr Sanderson' in which he describes Sanderson's research and logic principles, as well as ecclesiastical positions.
This 1678 first edition of Walton's 'Life of Sanderson' includes some of Sanderson's own tracts and reports.

Augustine of Hippo was a 5th-century early Christian church philosopher and theologian. While most known for his work 'City of God', he also wrote many other treatises on aspects of the Christian faith. His stance on free will vs predestination and fatalism were supported by and still is supported by, the Catholic Church, as his teachings on free will are consistent with modern doctrine.
Saint Augustine's 'Meditations'
is a collection of early church prayers and devotions along with teachings designed for priests and monks. It also includes the treatises and meditations of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and Saint Anselm of Canterbury which helped define Saint Augustine's stance on original sin.
This 1649 edition of the works of Augustine includes 'Meditations' and 'Soliloquies' translated by Henricus Sommalius.
