Spines have five raised bands, red morocco title labels, compartments ornately decorated in gilt. Some marking and slight worming to boards. Spines rubbed with slight wear to head and foot. A couple of volumes have slight cracking to joints but all boards are firmly attached. Gilt decorated board edges and turn-ins. All page edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Very tight bindings in excellent overall condition. Clean pages throughout. French language. All 30 plates are present and in first class condition (one plate in Vol. V has been bound in upside down.) A rare and important early edition of Molière's works, reproducing the 1682 first collected edition. An excellent example, complete with all plates and in attractive contemporary bindings. Wear and scratches to spine. Hinges bound tightly. Note in iron gall ink on leaf facing title page: "this Henry Hammond is thought to be the author of Whole Duty of Man.' The Whole Duty of Man is a Protestant devotional book that was published anonymously, with an introduction by Henry Hammond, though authorship was later attributed to Richard Allestree [1621-1681]. Henry Hammond [1605-1660] was a churchman, preacher, and Royalist sympathizer during the English Civil War. As a theologian, he produced several sermons and religious tracts, and compared texts of the New Testament in his book, "Paraphrase and Annotations Upon all the Books of the New Testament" [1653].

First edition, octavo; xvi,232pp, with full complement of 34 engravings, 33 of which are folding. In contemporary unlettered full calf (a little worn with minor loss to board corners, sometime skilfully rebacked in matching leather), five raised spine bands, internally clean with only the lightest of occasional dust staining. Muller was deputy head of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where he was instrumental to its transformation into a disciplined cadet academy. An attractive first edition example of his first work. Laurence Sterne possessed the text in second edition, with possible influence on Uncle Toby and Corporal Trim's obsessions with fortification in The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy. Lacks engraved titlepage (supplied in facsimile) and all but one of 6 plates. Printed Title and following 340pp badly cropped at fore-edge with loss of last letter of each line of title and most of marginal guide notes, remaining pages affected by light marks of previous damp at fore-edge. *Damaged and defective copy of very rare first edition of this important work on melancholia and neurology. This is a First edition thus of the "Quatrième Edition, revue & considérablement augmentée", printed in 1780. New articles are starred (*) to differentiate from those which had appeared in previous editions of this momumental work. This a complete 12-volume set, with each volume between 500 and 600 pages. Later bindings are still tight and text remarkably free from foxing, fading or other blemishes, BUT it is in places rather heavily underlined in pencil and/or ballpoint. This concerns maybe 1% of the text and does not impact its readability. See photos.
