There is an inscription in French saying that the book belongs to someone who is a sergeant in 152 brigade. The date of the inscription is unreadable. The book is signed on the first page. An inscription written in an old hand on a front blank leaf reads: "Ex domo Authoris Maii 4. 1677" (From the house of the author, May 4. 1677). William Owtram (1625-1679) was an English conformist theologian known for his great skill in rabbinical learning. Richard Bentley (1662-1742) English scholar and literary critic. He was made keeper of the Royal Libraries and was later appointed Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. First book published by Writing Master and Calligrapher Etienne de Blégny. a member of the guild of maîtres écrivains. This early pedagogical work is a treatise on French orthography. Notation inside front cover suggests this volume is from library of Augustin de Backer (1809-1873), Belgian Jesuit and renowned bibliographer.

He is known for his grammar of the Classical Nahuatl language. He went to Rome where he entered the Society of Jesus. From Rome he went to the New World, arriving in New Spain (now Mexico). There he dedicated himself to the study of the indigenous languages and became proficient in Otomi and then in Nahuatl. He was a friend of the Bishop and later Viceroy of New Spain, Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, as is documented by surviving letters written by Carochi to the bishop. Lancelot Andrewes was an English clergyman and scholar, who held high positions in the Church of England during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. He was in turn Bishop of Chichester, Ely and Winchester, and oversaw the translation of the Authorized (King James) Version of the Bible. His Tortura Torti - a learned work which grew out of the Gunpowder Plot controversy - was written in answer to Roberto Bellarmino's Matthaeus Tortus which had criticized James I's oath of allegiance. This leather bound book from 1845 has a gold seal on the cover depicting a figure holding a staff with a cross on top, circled by letters in gold saying "Society For Promoting Christian Knowledge, 1698". The book contains the three essays titled: The Churches of Rome and England Compared In Their Declared Doctrines and Practices; The Corruptions of the Church of Rome in Relation to Ecclesiastical Government; Dialogues Between a Protestant and a Roman Catholic, written by Mant, Richard (Bishop); Bull, George (Bishop); Hobson, S. (Reverend), respectively. The covers show some wear on the edges and corners, and there is the remnant of a paste-on label on the cover.The pages shiw some foxing. There is a former owner's inscription inside the cover dated April 23, 1845.This old book will make a unique addition to the library of the religious historian.
