Photographic frontis has tissue guard intact, with photographs throughout, along with a ground plan of the Abbey Church of Deir and Precincts, 1789. Contents include The Stone Circles of Deir, Patron Saint of Deir - Saint Drostan, The Book of Deir, The Parish and Ministers of Deir, Eminent Men and Women, the Ballad of Sir James the Rose and much more. Covers show corner wear, age darkening, small ink stain to front cover, front hinge starting, occasional foxing (mostly on prelims). BINDING TIGHT. From the personal collection of Francis M. O'Brien, author and legendary Maine Bookseller (no identification markings, but he noted in pencil, on the ffp "stone circle").

In Bologna, et in Todi: Per Vincenzo Galassi, con Lic. De'Superiori, 1663. Vellum. Very Good +. 3 x 4 7/8 inches. 94 pages with 4 large woodcut illustrations of Death, Heaven, Hell and Angels. Endpaper bears the inscription "Edward Howard Griggs/Florence/March 27, 1895." Bound in later full vellum over thin boards with "Il Pensaci Bene" handwritten in ink to spine and other near contemporary writing to covers, now largely illegible. Griggs was an author and lecturer. de Barry (1587-1661) was a French Jesuit and author. This volume is notable for the illustrations of heaven and hell.

Bound in 3/4 brown highly polished leather and pebble grained light brown cloth which is lightly sunbleached. Covers rubbed and scuffed mostly at edges. Recased with renewed endpapers and original leather spine with red morocco spine label with gilt title and gilt decorations relaid. A very good copy of this monumental and heavily illustrated survey of English and Welsh churches.

1682 Athenagoras Athens Early Church PAGANISM Cannibalism Marcus Aurelius Greek

Athenagoras was a 2nd-century early Church Father from Athens. While few of his writings still exist today, those that do were highly influential on other early philosophers such as Eusebius. In his book 'Embassy for the Christians', Athenagoras pleads to Marcus Aurelius that he and his son Commodus show mercy to Christians and stop their unjust discrimination. This book also directly denounced paganism and sought to prove to the Roman rulers that God was the one and only true God. He also discusses the horrors of cannibalism, the evils of Gladiator contests, and the use of drugs. His other works all seemed to stem from 'Embassy' – defenses of his views and Christian doctrines.

This 1682 Oxford edition of the works of Athenagoras was translated out of the Greek into Latin by Conrad Gessner. Printed in Greek and Latin on opposite pages.

This 1689 first edition is a collection of Dewsbury's works from throughout his ministry including his 'True Prophecy of the Day of the Lord' – a treatise explaining the return of Christ.

The Ancrene Wisse, or Ancrene Riwle, was a 13th-century instructional guide for female monastics living under the anchorite rule. Anchoresses would completely disassociate themselves with society to focus on prayer and asceticism in one solitary location. This guide was collected, edited, and reissued in 1853 by James Morton who included both modern English translations of the ancient Anglo-Saxon English. It includes a thorough history of the Ancrene Riwle – the origins of the sacred quotes, possible authors, and the use of the semi-Anglo grammar.

Condition of the book is Very Good Plus. The binding is straight and sound. Inside pages are complete and unmarked.
Condition of the dust jacket is Good. The DJ is complete, not price clipped. It shows moderate chipping along the spine. The spine is also slightly sun darkened. That said, it displays well in a new mylar cover.

Neat ink inscription to the front pastedown endpaper, possibly from the translator; "With affectionate greetings from Oliver." otherwise a fine clean copy throughout. Published black cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. In the scarce original dustwrapper. A couple of chips to the top edge and the spine toned but generally in very good condition. A fine copy of the book in a very good dustwrapper. Originally published in Russian in 1927.

NP. 1951. Oblong 4to. (11.5 x 7.9 inches). Beautiful calligraphic manuscript in red and black. Six leaves written on both sides on hand made paper, plus four blank leaves, all sewn in with red cord. In a fine leather binding of full dark brown morocco with bevelled edges to the boards. Multiple blind ruled line borders and gilt ruled panel with floral corner pieces to the front board. A little rubbing and marking to the binding but still a very good attractive volume. ---- The carols included are; God rest you merry, gentlemen, Annunciation Carol, The Shepherd's cradle song, King Jesus hath a garden, Nowell!
