1681 1ed POPISH PLOT Sermon Conspiracy Charles II Jekyll Mystery of Iniquity

The Popish Plot was one of the two most iconic conspiracies of 17th-century England. Like the Gunpowder Plot, the Popish Plot alleged that members of the Catholic Church would assassinate King Charles II, something many Protestants would not take seriously or understand.
After the Popish Plot dissolved in December of 1680 and numerous men were charged with treason, Anglican preacher Thomas Jekyll preached a curious, anti-Catholic sermon which was intended to instruct other Protestants on the effects of such a conspiracy. This sermon was published the following year under the title 'Popery, a Great Mystery of Iniquity'.

1679 Scottish Reformed Bishop Church of Scotland Catholic Gordon Gunpowder Plot

"The Reformed Bishop" by Catholic priest James Gordon is a 1679 treatise on the behaviors and bishops and church fathers. Gordon includes 19 separate articles examining Protestant bishops' conduct which, as expected, enraged the same Protestant bishops. Scottish churchmen heavily prosecuted Gordon for this treatise and banned the book claiming his views to be lies and deceitful. This work even contains references to the Gunpowder Plot and its effects on the church some 70 years later.

Description:
1585 1ed Sententiae Portuguese Eborense Cicero Laelius de Amicitia Philosophy 2v

"A room without books is like a body without a soul."
― Marcus Tullius Cicero

Cicero was one of the most notable and prolific Roman figures of ancient Rome. His philosophical works and letters are considered the most reliable source of information for the period leading up to the fall of the Roman Republic. In the first century B.C., Cicero wrote a series of 'Sententiae', most notably his 'work 'Laelius De Amicitia' – a landmark survey of friendship and relationships. This treatise would serve as the basis for countless future works including 16th-century Portuguese philosopher André Rodrigues Eborense and his work 'Sententiae'.

This lot of the works of Eborense includes his "Exemplorum memorabilium", a philosophical study in Christian ethics.
