Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1788. Hardcover. 8vo. Full vellum. (Ca. 300pp). Sewn-in green silk page marker. Very good. Rather crude binding pleasingly aged, yellowed and irregular, but without the bowing often evident on full vellum bindings. Intriguingly cryptic late 18th century handwritten copy of what appears to be a hairy theological text by the Spanish cleric, Jesuit and author (1562-1655) known in Latin as Luisii Turriani, first published in Madrid in 1630. Handsomely and boldly penned entirely in Latin in rich brown ink on attractive laid paper of the period, with a great many headings and subheadings. Our Latin is limited to "e pluribus unum," "sic semper tyrannis" and similar commonplace phrases, but our guess is that this was the product of a seminary student or other academic as a Latin exercise. "Tuccillo" is penned below the year on the title page as if produced in that city, but our research fails to produce a city by that name. Tight, clean and quite handleable.

Description:
1671 1ed Fides Ecclesiae History of Greek & Oriental Christians Severus & Simon

Richard Simon was a 17th-century French divine who preached and lectured on philosophy throughout his career. His most important book was 'Fides Ecclesiae Orientalis', which was merely a translation of one of the tracts of Gabriel Severus (Metropolitan of Philadelphia, Ala-Shehr). According to the NCUK, Simon "gave this work as a supplement to first volume of 'Perpetuity of the Faith Respecting the Eucharist', whose authors he accused of having committed many gross errors." Ultimately, this work was a description of the condition and history of Greek Oriental Christians.

1770 1ed Germantown Pennsylvania SAUR Lucius Paradisische Aloe German Gunwad

Samuel Lucius's 'Die Paradisische Aloe' is a collection of German inspirational lessons, most of which were written to encourage young female Christians. And while the content of this book is important, the real draw to this book is the history of its printing. This 1st edition was printed in 1770 Pennsylvania. Christopher Saur and his father controlled nearly all German theological printing in Colonial America. It also happened that they were opposed to the American Revolution, leading their printed material to be published with anti-Revolutionary ideas.

1713 LAW 1ed Gibson Codex Juris Anglicani Church England HUGE FOLIOS Anglican
Edmund Gibson was an early 18th-century British bishop who is best known for his writings on ecclesiastical law. One of his best works was his 1713 'Codex Juris ecclesiastici Anglicani", or 'Code of Anglican Law'. In the years leading to this work, Gibson argued for the rights of archbishops many of which were called into question during the reign of William and Anne.

Description:
1842 William Paley Natural Theology Christian Apologetics Science Philosophy
A scarce printing of William Paley's famous Christian apologetics work, 'Natural Theology'. A scientific and philosophical treatise, this title is commonly referenced amongst scholars when discussing the history and development of the modern understanding of scientific evolution. Significantly influenced by naturalist John Ray's work, Paley further developed Ray's ideas by proposing that the oft-observed complex adaptations seen in plants and animals were evidence of benevolent divine design. Notably, this work is also the origin of the "watchmaker analogy" a now, well-known, and commonly used teleological argument.
This rare, illustrated edition includes the highly-desired companion collection of 40 engraved plates by James Paxton that were originally independently published in 1826.

1886 1ed Mormon Portraits Joseph Smith Orson Sarah Pratt Polygamy LDS Wymetal
"Many little bodies of new-born children floated down the Mississippi..." -Abigail Harris
An exceptionally rare and controversial work, this first volume of the 'Mormon Portraits' by Austrian journalist Wilhelm von Wymetal is an intense yet fascinating read. Wymetal, using the pseudonym Dr. W. Wyl, presents a compilation of interviews with a variety of individuals affiliated with Mormonism and its leadership. Wyl's intent was to both debunk claims by and expose scandalous practices within the early Mormon church. One such example; In response to pro-polygamous beliefs and claims, Sarah Pratt, wife of early prominent Mormon leader Orson Pratt, insisted Joseph Smith had no polygamous offspring due to the large-scale secret practice of abortion in Nauvoo, Illinois.

1861 John Bunyan Pilgrim's Progress Illustrated Demons Puritan Memoir Bible ART

"What God says is best, is best, though all the men in the world are against it."
― John Bunyan, The Pilgrims Progress

John Bunyan's "The Pilgrim's Progress" is one of the most important theological works ever written. Thought to be first printed in 1678, Bunyan began writing this story while in prison. It is known that while Bunyan was in prison, his only companions were the Bible and Foxe's "Book of Martyrs" – thus, the two literary giants in his jail cell certainly influenced the writing of "Pilgrim's Progress." A Quaker, by the name of Granger, visited Bunyan in prison and says of him:
"Bunyan, who had been mentioned among the least and lowest of our writers, and even ridiculed as a driveller by those who had never read him, deserves a much higher rank than is commonly imagined. His 'Pilgrim's Progress' gives us a clear and distinct idea of Calvinistic divinity."

This Routledge edition includes a memoir of John… Read More
