Library stamp on main title accompanied by a second perforated library stamp near the printer's device. The outer edges to the first few prelims are slightly worn. Pages are generally clean with occasional mild marginal spotting. A small piece is missing from bottom margin of the final leaf. Page 492 is a bit soiled. Bound in brown library buckram; title and shelf number in gilt on the spine; pocket on inside front cover. Hermann Witsius (1636-1708) was a Dutch theologian and a professor of divinity at Franeker (1675), Utrecht (1680), and Leiden (1698). [EB11]. His Aegyptiaca (first printed in 1683) compares the religious rites of the Jews and the Egyptians. He argues against the theory put forth by Sir John Marsham and by John Spencer that Jewish traditions were derived from Egyptian practices. In the introductory Note, the author says the some of the messages are based on the "Secret Doctrine" of Madame Blavatsky.

In wonderful condition. Likely to have been well shelved and kept from the beginning. Exceedingly rare in the first edition in this condition. Pages are bright, unmarked, clean. Literally two small spotting marks if you look for them, no other marking or tanning. Remarkably pristine. DJ is unclipped, and in an excellent state. The most very minor of shelf wear here and there. Boards clean and tight. All quite remarkably well preserved. Hard to imagine a better copy exists. The ancient Vedic religion was formed from the religious ideas and practices among some of the Indo-Aryan Peoples of Northwest India. Rele's book is a summation of his views that the Hindu scriptural texts are books of a biological nature and his research interprets the Vedic Gods from a biological stand point, particularly in relation to the central nervous system. A scarce book, especially in this excellent condition. See photos all of which are of the actual copy for sale. Boards are tight and very clean, with just some few markings here and there but overall excellent. Bottom corners are slightly bumped. Rear end paper has very neat pencil notes of a previous reader summarising the book (see photo) - removable if desired. Spine is clean and tight. Pages are bright, clean and in most part in remarkable condition.
