Contents complete in 3 sections with 43 text illustrations and 6 folding plates (one torn). The first part of the book covers Harpocrates - 180 pages. The second section has a separate title page 'Gisberti Cuperi Monumenta Antiqua Inedita and follows in in page numbering. The third section has a new title page 'Stephani le Moine ad Gisb. Cuperum de Melanophoris Epistola' and again follows on in page numbering. This section is written in greek and hebrew as well as Latin. Very bright and clean throughout. Deals with the cult of the Egyptian god Horus in the Roman world, detailing rights, beliefs and monuments. A spectacular book mainly due to the number and quality of the text and folding engravings. Small 8vo but wider pages than is normal.294 pages plus an 'index auctorum' and an 'index rerum' and an errata list.

The same image is present in black and white on the title page. Head and tail caps are professionally repaired. The wraps show wear to the extremities as well as some age-toning, soiling, spotting, mild edge chipping etc. The text block is loosely sewn with a single stitch through each gathering. Interior pages contain periodic spots of marginal foxing. A few minor marginal tears are neatly sealed. The upper edge of page 69 is chipped (1 x 0.5 cm). Edme-Gilles Guyot was an 18th-century scientist most-known for his studies on physics and physical magic. He helped establish technology used in phantasmagoria. In his best book, 'Nouvelles Recreations', Guyot describes his experiments on how to perform magic tricks and mathematical phenomena including the famous 'cups and balls' trick. This book caused a lot of discussion on the existence of ghosts, particularly in the use of smoke and mirrors.

This 1800 edition features over 100 illustrated engravings showing the tools and methods used in Guyot's experiments.

The colouring scheme is based entirely McLean's own, but he drew on his extensive study of coloured alchemical manuscripts. There is a short introduction, but this book really consists only of the full page coloured pictures. It complements the Magnum Opus volume A commentary on the Mutus Liber also by Adam McLean.

John MacGowan was an 18th-century Baptist minister who wrote a number of sometimes controversial, satirical works exploring religious and philosophical issues. In his best known work, "Infernal Conference," he used the device of a series of dialogues between various demons to explore a number of questions; primarily human responsibility versus demonic manipulation.
MacGowen raised a few hackles with the blunt way he mocked the faults of other Christians, and for the subtext that Satan and his minions played a far greater part in earthly affairs than most people believed.
This 1794 American edition was published in Worcester, Massachusetts.
