Description:
1880 1ed Dairy Farming by Sheldon Agriculture Cattle Color Illustrated Milk Cows

John Sheldon's 'Dairy Farming' is one of, if not the most important late 19th-century British treatises on farming and maintaining dairy cattle. This book covers a variety of topics including how to breed dairy cows, feeding with plants and weeds, milking, how to sell and trade milk, as well as the milk and dairy industry in various countries including America and Canada.

While the contents of this work are important, accurate, and still viable, the color illustrations are without question the most desirable aspect of this book. Illustrated with 25 chromolithographic plates of cows, barns, and farm plans.

Description:
[6], LXXIV, [2]; [4], [10] pp.Presentation copy of one of the most beautifully produced works on cattle, by the "zootechnician", Émile Baudement (1810-1864). The 87 plates of bovine animals are arranged by origin, each region with its own part-title: England, Holland and Denmark, Switzerland and Germany, (the empire of) Austria, and France. Many of the excellent plates are after photographs by Adrien Nadar. Artists like Emile van Marcke, Isodore Bonheur and Barye contributed to this work. "The plates were produced by a mixed process of photographic transposing on to a metal plate (heliography) followed by handwork of various kinds - soft ground etching, mezzotint and aquatint, the background tint being achieved by lithography" (Boalch). While regular copies are bound in green half roan, with plain cloth sides, the present set is bound in red half morocco, with gold-blocked red cloth sides with the note "offert par le Minstre de l'Agriculture". All copies include a preliminary "rapport" on the work by… Read More

Scarce guide for potential immigrants to northern Wisconsin, then only 48 years a state; replete with photos of hardy if dour rural folk and their prodigious cabbages (p. 99), heaps of potatoes (p. 93), neck-high peas (p. 83), houses, barns, and other glories of limitless possibility - if you could clear the stumps. There is a section on land & soil types, success stories, also a little on charcoal, logging, boats, railroads, sheep, cattle, other industries. The author was Dean of the College of Agriculture at the University of Wisconsin; the book was given upon request to the Secretary, State Board of Immigration, Rhinelander. This copy has an illustrated cover with a (perished) leather spine, as pictured; it was also issued in plain green cloth. Fair: the covers (front, with a few leaves attached, rear, by itself) detached, much wear & rubbing, inner hinge 'repaired' with thick blue tape, to no avail.
