Original owner's gift message (blacked out) takes up most of f/ep, but otherwise a good clean tight copy of this hard-cover book. Issued to accompany the exhibition of the same name held at the Spertus Gallery in 2003-04, deals with the Temple at Jerusalem, and with the ''Temple Scroll'' which was one of the Dead Sea Scrolls. 167pp, illustrated throughout, mostly in colour.. Rare. Size: 147x80 cm. Original rubbing on thin paper (maybe Bible paper because of its very fine quality). was attached to thick paper to make a hanging scroll. Some wear on the thick paper, but very good on the thin rubbing paper. There are two red stamps on middle-right of the scroll, which probably is the stamps of former owners. This stele in 1489 is the first document found and also a very important document to describe the history of Judaism and Jewish people in China. Its contents are in three sections; one explains the origin and history of Judaism, another describes the rituals and worship of Chinese Jews around the time of the stele construction, and the last tells that there were 70 surnames families of the Kaifeng Jewish community, several surnames being the officers of Chinese Emperor, a Zhao surname among them being a past imperial audience. This book is in good condition. There is some minor wear on the front, back and spine of the cover boards and the edges. The corners are bumped. The previous owners name is pasted on the inside of the front cover board. The pages are just yellowing, but clear of any markings. Half-tone photos throughout.A very evocative guide book to "Jewish excursions" in Frankfurt and Hessen, dedicated to "My wife, Bertha Lilienthal, née Fuchs. My hiking companion on rocky roads." The preface is dated almost exactly a year before Kristallnacht. The author was the chief cantor at the main synagogue in Wiesbaden. He and his wife fled to Amsterdam in June 1939. He was transported to Theresienstadt in 1943 and murdered in October 1944. His wife's exact fate is unknown.
