Description:
1854 HEBREW Duties of the Heart Jewish Law Vilnius Lithuania RUSSIA Judaica
A rare, 19th-century traditional Hebrew text printing of the 'Chovot HaLevavot' or 'The Duties of the Heart'.

'Duties of the Heart' was written by 11th-century Rabbi Bahya ibn Paquada – a book which discusses unity with God, characteristics and attributes of God, Jewish worship practices, Jewish law, asceticism, and the immortality of the soul.
Hebrew texts from this era are considered quite rare, but this edition was published in Vilnius, Lithuania while it was under control of the Russian Empire. Nearly half of the population in Vilnius was Jewish in the second-half of the 19th-century so it is unsurprising to find Hebrew books printed in Vilnius.

1737 HEBREW LAW Shulchan Aruch Yore De'ah Wilhelmsdorf Rabbinical Judaism LOT

The Shulchan Aruch, also known as the 'Code of Jewish Law', is an extensive collection of legal codes under Rabbinical Judaism. From its appearance in the mid-16th-century, this work is regularly paired with law commentaries, as is the case with this 1737 Wilhelmsdorf edition. The Yoreh De'ah is also found in this work, a section of the law covering lesser aspects of Jewish law such as honoring parents, circumcision, forbidden foods, and studying Torah scrolls.
This lot features 8 other Hebrew books from the 19th-century – see pictures.

1765 Hebrew SEFER Ohel Mosheh Zalkva UKRAINE Zhovkva Zvi Hirsh Commentary Jewish

A rare 18th-century Hebrew printing of the 'Sefer Ohel Mosheh' published in Zalkva, Ukraine. This exceedingly rare edition of Hebrew scripture text includes notes and commentary by Zalkva Rabbi Moshe Ben-Zvi Hirsh. More commonly known as Zhovkva today, Zalkva housed an important Jewish printing house from which this sefer was published.
This particular sefer discusses the use of Hebrew language and grammar in conjunction with scripture.
Worth noting, the town of Zalkva was under Nazi occupation during World War II, and nearly all of the 4500 Jewish residents were sentenced to extermination camps and the Jewish synagogue was destroyed.

"Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."
This remarkable and groundbreaking study explores the author's view that there is a close correspondence between the basic tenets of alchemy and those of Jewish esoteric tradition, generally known as Kabbalah.
The author, Arturo Schwarz, points out that both alchemy and Kabbalah are frequently distorted in popular as well as scholarly literature. The real concern of alchemy is not to transmute lead into gold, but rather, through the investigation of the self, to evolve from the state of ignorance (symbolized by lead) to that of awareness (symbolized by gold). As Schwarz points out, "this drive toward self-awareness is also basic in the teachings of the major kabbalists."
Schwarz goes on to explain that in both systems… Read More

Signed and numbered by the artist Alisa Golden: "The Bearded Vulture is a fascinating Old World bird; we don't have them in North America, but they did have them in Palestine/Israel as far back as biblical times, and as recently as 1982, the last time a pair raised a family there. I was fascinated that the majority of their diet is bones, and they wait for other scavengers to finish before they swoop in. In captivity their body feathers remain white. By creating a doubled cover and two one-sheet accordion structures I wanted to capture the feeling of unfolding out into their seven-to-nine-foot wingspan. "Peres.
