In 1780, in Venice, Juan Nuix published Riflessioni imparziali supra l'umanita degli spagnuoli nell' Indie contro i pretersi filosofi e politici. Nuix, a Catalan living in Italy since the expulsion of the Jesuits, wrote the book to defend Spanish colonialism and historiography against the attacks of Robertson and Raynal. It sailed by the censors in the Council of the Indies, and two separate translations appeared in succession, one in 1782, edited by a member of the Royal Council, Pedro Varela y Ulloa, and another in 1783, by Joseph Nuix, Juan's brother. Volume I. pp. viii, 628, with frontispiece of the author. Volume II. pp. 205, [1]. Bound in period quarter leather with marbled boards. Re-backed; the original spine is preserved although it is darkened and well worn. Inner hinges neatly strengthened. Interior pages contain mild scattered foxing and minor wear. Peder Rhode (1734-1793) was a Danish pastor and historian. His "Samlinger til de danske Øers Laalands og Falsters Historie" (first published in two volumes 1776-94) contains interesting details on the customs, life-style, superstition and folklore of the Danish islands Lolland and Falster. The 1859 edition includes many changes, additions and corrections.

Daniel Defoe (ca. 1660-1731) published this essay under the original title of "Conjugal Lewdness or Matrimonial Whoredom" (1717) before being asked to rename it for the sake of propriety. This copy shows the cancel title mounted to a stub (as it should be!) Contemporary full calf, gold-tooled filets, fleurons on boards and coat of arms of Earl Stanley on upper board, ribbed spine with gold-tooling, inner filets in gold-tooling, all edged gilt. Boards have been repaired and the spine re-laid onto the back. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with just a touch of foxing to the pages. vi, [2], 406 pp. 195 x 125mm (7¾ x 5 inches). 625 Pages. The book includes portraits, illustrations, and maps and was written by the School Manager/Secretary in the Norwegian Whaling Association. It is all in the Norwegian language and is a history of Norway's whaling industry. The book's exterior has two worn corners, and two moderately worn corners, worn marks along the bottom edges and less wearing marks on the top edges, and worn areas at the top and bottom edge of the spine. In addition, the spine is faded and darkened and there is one small hole on it. The interior book has the former owner's (Whaling Museum) bookplate inside the front cover along with a sticker below it, and a worn spot/hole on the next inside page. Outside of those detriments, there are no further visible distractions, detriments, or extraneous markings throughout the book and thus all printing and the numerous photographs and illustrations are all in a very well-preserved and readable condition and the book's bindings remain tight and therefore sound.If you order this… Read More
