A few textleaves with faint offsetting from the plates. Plates clean and fine. First edition of this highly esteemed work on Rock-Roses and their cultivated varieties. The work is prized by gardeners for its showry rose-like flowers. Three are are color plates, including the frontispiece and three are in sepia, two of which have overslips. With half-title. Original drab boards, rebacked to style. Edges uncut. Inner hinges strengthened. Some minor foxing, mainly to preliminaries and margins, not affecting plates. Boards a bit rubbed and with some minor staining. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. Housed in a custom marbled slipcase, with printed paper label on spine and morocco lined edges. Overall a very good copy with all overslips present. In his Preface, Morris acknowledges the works of Humphry Repton, Uvedale Price, William Gilpinhis as inspiration. Repton's influence can be seen in the presence of the overslips. Hardcover bound in early full speckled calf with raised bands and gilt tooling on the spine. Binding housed in a modern removable clear mylar jacket. Moderate rubbing and wear to the binding. Hinges sound; headcap of the spine is chipped. The binding is rubbed and abraded at the fore edges. Marbled endpapers and all edges marbled. Text is toned and is generally clean. Not an illustrated work. Text is in French. A translation of the title into English is, "Treatise on the Planting and Cultivation of the Principal Vegetable Plants, Collected from the English Dictionary.

Spine with five raised bands, the compartments decorated, ruled and lettered in gilt. Marbled paper on boards. A very good copy of this popular work.

Cassell and Company, Ltd, 1910. Hard cover. Very good. No dust jacket.. Written by Harry Higgott Thomas, the first regular gardening columnist for the Daily Telegraph. Green cloth, gilt embossed, with garden picture on front (happy to send photo as this is unusually lovely spine and front cover! ) Interior shows some foxing in first block of pages but otherwise clean and tight in binding. Former owner's name on front flyleaf. Sixteen color plates and 96 illustrations from photos. Color plates tipped in and overlaid with protective sheet with caption printed on it. Title page lists date of publication as 1910, no other dates shown. Overall a handsome edition.

John Lindley then took over as editor on a further 19 volumes under the title Edwards's Botanical Register from 1829 to 1847. Some foxing to the first and last couple of pages otherwise a clean copy throughout. One small tear to the bottom margin of the frontispiece, not affecting the image. Recent leather binding of half dark green morocco. Spine with raised bands, the compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Marbled paper on boards. Neat previous owner bookplate mounted onto the inside read endpaper. A little rubbing to the binding but overall a very good copy.
