Two slim pamphlets of verse bound together in old half leather with paper covered boards, but these are now very soiled and very worn. Split completely along the front joint. Small oxidised bookplate to the front pastedown of Thomas Thorpe Delasaux. Tear and crease to one of the front free end papers. Some spotting and staining. One of only 150 copies, this is a biography of Elmo Elton Shaver (1916-1995), a Francophile and popular teacher of foreign languages. Elmo kept diaries documenting his life from tenth grade until just days before his death. Oliver Pollak, a lawyer and professor of history at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, has drawn from Elmo's diaries to paint a vivid picture of his life. We follow him growing up in Long Beach and his 1937 junior year at the Sorbonne in Paris. (That year had a profound influence on Elmo, and he was a frequent visitor during the rest of his life.) Beautiful opening spread borders and two illustrations by Sir Edward Burne-Jones along with ornamental initials and borders throughout. Limited to 300 copies. (Sparling 52 ,p.171, Peterson A52, Tomlinson 52). Troy type, with stage directions in Chaucer type. Fine in limp full vellum with some original ties, four missing. Morris profoundly influenced the typographical revival of the late 19th century by showing that printing was an art and its details worth infinite trouble. This is copy number 530 from the Cercle d'Art edition that was limited to 666 copies. There were also editions printed by Abrams and Schunemann of 666 copies each. Sheet size: 32.7 x 25 cm. The box measures 35 x 27,7 x 6,3 cm. Apart from light wear to corner tips of the slipcase and the inevitable offsetting from the lithographs this is a mint copy, in collectors condition. .

The typeface used for the text is handset Italian Old Style, designed by Frederic Goudy, which has a storybook quality suitable for Kipling. The gold-foiled typeface in various sizes is Libra, designed by Sjoerd Henrik de Roos, which was chosen to reference the use of an Uncial typeface in the movie. The pages were printed damp on custom handmade cotton paper from The Saint-Armand paper mill. It is half-bound in black goat leather.
