London: Hurst & Blackett, 1913. Hardcover. 8vo. Full tan calf with gilt spine panels, dentelles. viii, 307pp. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Very good. A bit scuffed at edges. First edition, handsomely bound by Riviere. Not really a travelogue, but -- well, let Fielding-Hall explain it: "It is of the humanity which India shares with the rest of the world, the hearts that beat always the same under the whatever skin, the ideals that can never be choked by no matter what customs or religions, that this book is concerned with."

Oxford University Press. 1948. NEW EDITION. 8vo. (7.5 x 5.3 inches). Eight full page colour plates, and several line drawings in the text, by A. E. Jackson. A fine clean copy. Finely bound in mid twentieth century half red morocco leather binding. Spine with five raised bands. Compartments lettered in gilt. Red cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. A hint of fading to the spine but overall a lovely copy in a fine binding. The binding is unsigned but certainly the work of a master bookbinder.

The compartments are ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Top edges gilt. A finely bound set of this important collection.

A lovely bright and clean copy, finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe of London, in half red morocco. Spine with raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments ruled and lettered in gilt. Red cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. A pleasing copy.

London: Edward Moxon, 1856. Handsomely bound in full green morocco, the back ornately stamped in gilt decorations and lettering, the covers with lovely gilt decorations at corners, top edge gilt, marbled end pages, silk marker. Recently expertly restored, the front cover reattached, hinges and joints strengthened, new marbled end papers added. With original marbled end papers laid in indicating this book from the collection of noted art collector M.C.D. Borden, his bookplate front paste down lost to the restoration. Penciled notes on the original end paper note this book to be extra illustrated by 51 plates, including the RARE "unpublished etching of a bust of Shelley (p.236)". Known as "the Calico King" for his fabric printing empire, Borden's art collection included works by Frans Hals, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Constable, Gainsborough, J.M.W.Turner, Corot, Delacroix, &c. Very Good Plus, moderate toning at engraving and title page of Vol. II only, light rubbing to marbled covers. A clean and attractively bound copy.

NP. ND. Circa 1890. FINELY BOUND BLANK BOOK. (6.1 x 4.6 inches). Circa 150 blank leaves of laid paper. First five pages have neat hand written poems and there is a neat four line inscription, dated 1892, to the front blank endpaper, otherwise clean and unmarked throughout. Full dark green crushed morocco binding by (or possibly for, although the British Library lists one of the bindings in its collection as being bound by Dreyfous) Dreyfous of London, and with their paper label to one of the blank endpapers. Spine with raised bands, the compartments ruled and decorated in gilt. Both boards with decorative gilt borders and elaborate gilt design within. Double gilt ruled lines to the board edges. Gilt inner dentelles around red silk endpapers. All edges gilt. Spine faded and a little rubbed and there is one small hole to one hinge but still a very attractive binding, housed in a morocco slip case with marbled inner papers. The American Historical Society, Inc., 1932. Three volume set (complete). VG+. Interiors bright and clean; each volume has an old price penciled on flyleaf. No other marks. Bindings are tight. Binding is brown embossed cloth (that looks like leather) showing a scene with a covered wagon, tipis, and a canoe. Minor shelf and handling wear to bindings -- edges and corners scuffed, spine tops and bottoms dented, some light white staining on spine of vol. II. Marbled end sheets and text block edges. Overall a clean, solid set showing minimal signs of use. Photos are of the set we have here at Barbed Wire Books.

London: Robt. Riviere & Son Finely bound in paneled morocco by Riviere & Son in two shades of blue, gilt back, marbled end papers with gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt. Near Fine, rubs to raised bands and boards, charming full page gift inscription dated March 19, 1929 - "To Miss Spaulding from the cast of 'Quality Street' " and signed by 9 members of the cast with their roles denoted, small seller's ticket bottom front end page.
