According to the manufacturer, Gallia Laboratories, Kola Astier builds muscular strength, fights fatigue, relieves depression and "melancholia," stimulates the heart, and helps in combatting bronchitis, pneumonia, and "senile debility." It also acts, we're told, as a "remarkable regenerator" for "tired, overworked men and women." Where did this cure for every ailment come from? According to the company, Dr. P. Astier recognized the amazing properties of the kola nut. "Long before the white man traversed the midnight jungles and the wild plains of mysterious Africa, the natives were using the fruit of the Kola Tree to increase their physical stamina and powers of endurance. Finally, when the first white explorers forced their way into the… Read More

[Civil War]. [Reconstruction]. [North Carolina]."The triumphant North demanded three things of the defeated South: acknowledgment of the emancipation of its slaves; contract freedom for all citizens, black and white; and national reunification. Emancipation, freedom, and reunification were still just words. Their meanings remained unfixed. The image of the new country would emerge only as the lines connecting these ideological dots were drawn. As former North Carolina governor David L. Swain recognized, 'With reference to emancipation, we are at the beginning of the War.'" [Richard White. "The Republic For Which It Stands."]OFFICE OF THE PROVOST MARSHALL, NORTH CAROLINA. Description:
Here is the notorious original 1927 pamphlet that set the Pacific Northwest literary establishment on its ear. Status Rerum. A Manifesto, Upon The Present Condition Of Northwestern Literature, Containing Several Near-Libelous Utterances Upon Persons In The Public Eye. By James Stevens of Washington, H.L. Davis of Oregon. Privately Printed For The Craft. The Dalles, Ore. Small octavo. 8 pages with cover. Limited to 200 numbered copies privately printed in 1927. This is #73.
Only ten copies in libraries, according to WorldCat databases. When published, the pamphlet was sent to newspapers and magazines across the Pacific Northwest and probably a few select places in California and the East Coast; most were likely tossed into the proverbial round file. It has since taken its place in Pacific Northwest history, being reprinted in the six-volume Oregon Literature Series anthologies done by Oregon State University Press in the 1990s, and still considered controversial today. Most interested parties will… Read More
