Many leaves are carbon, with a few the original, and most leaves have a few holograph edits. Paper watermarked "Silver Line". An illustrated advertisement for the "Rekarts Instantaneous Spring Back Binder" pasted-down to front interior binding panel. Laid-in is an original photograph (20.5 x 16 cm.), signed by the photographer "Thos. Tindall, Hancock?" (the subject of the photo is presumably the compiler, R.H. Murphy). ~ A "manuscript" cookbook with more than three hundred eighty recipes in ditto or mimeograph (alternating blue or black ink), many with holograph edits. Based on the style of edits (textual and not culinary) and the detailed Table of Contents, it seems likely this was a compilation being prepared for publication. Small Octavo. Bound in maroon limp calf, rubbed, scuffed, and well used but still strong. Internally a little grubby and smudged by handling, much as might be expected of a working kitchen book. 22pp. of handwritten recipes, rather enthusiastically jammed onto each page as if the author was afraid of running out of space, there's a rather youthful exuberance to the putting together of this little pocket recipe book. The recipes are dominated by cakes, puddings and breads, including Raspberry Fool, and various sponge cakes, with some complex preserved meat dishes like Calves' Feet Jelly, and a recipe for Mock Turtle Soup involving a Calf's Head with the skin on. The spelling is a little erratic, the composition pretty makeshift, but that doesn't detract from it being a handy little household reference.

1897 hardcover as pictured. Binding is loose with front endpapers detached. Maroon cloth boards with gold and black stamping are soiled and very worn with fraying at head and tail of spine and at corners. Both hinges cracked with the front board partially detached. As noted above, front free endpapers are detached but the remainder of the text block is intact. Edge of text block and several pages are splattered. The redoutable Maria Parloa's first book, named after the swanky Maine hotel where she worked as a cook. As outlined in her preface, part one of the book is for plain cooking, cooking everything that is within the reach of an ordinary family, while the second part contains directions for richer cooking.
