A rare first printing of the life of James Fitzgibbon who had the unusual distinction of receiving the Naval General Service Medal for the action at Copenhagen whilst serving as a private soldier in the 49th Regiment on board HMS Monarch but did not receive a Military General Service Medal for his more significant contribution to the war in Canada in 1812-14, being not present at any of the actions for which clasps were awarded. Gilt decorated and lettered light brown cloth, spine lightly faded and leans slightly, corners bumped, interior largely clean, some minor foxing to prelim pages and one or two juvenile pencil marks, mainly to the back of illustrations, an illustration missing between pages 72 and 73, fold-out facsimile of letter creased

Recently bound in period-style red half-morocco over paper-covered boards, with raised bands and gilt title-labels to spines. Edges toned and uncut (indeed the signatures are in the greater part unopened). Some mild intermittent foxing and staining to text in the main two volumes, with heavier staining and old (1823) owner's name to title-page in the General Introduction volume, but in all very bright and near fine. Otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Very neat -- a sound and very handsome set. Large folding map in Volume I well-preserved and bright with just a short closed tear (1 cm.) near stub. A very rare book. This is a clean copy. No markings. Excellent binding. Illustrated throughout with charts and maps. A section of glossy, black and white plates. The dust jacket has no tears. Slight wear at the top edge. A book for the serious collector.
