Sir John Ross (1777-1856) was a member of the Royal Navy, British naval officer and explorer who was selected to lead an arctic expedition through David Strait and Baffin Bay in search of a Northwest passage. The Settlers in Canada is a children's novel written by Frederick Marryat, and published in 1844. The novel is set in the wilderness of Upper Canada in the 1790s. It describes the adventures of an immigrant family who settle near Lake Ontario, despite the threats from the native people and wild animals (see Wikipedia).

Hardcover bound in red cloth with cover lettering and rules in gilt. The binding is rubbed and worn, and the fore edges of both covers have been damped. Inner hinges secure. Endpapers foxed, and the front flyleaf has a couple of prior owners' signatures. The text is toned and has a few stains as well as some browning on two pages where a piece of ephemera had been laid in loosely (now laid in at the front of the book).
