Description:
Etched playing board with rules of the game in lower margin of the sheet and publisher's number 221. Sheet-size 407 x 335 mm. Very rare and beautifully illustrated etched sheet for dice game; the centre field of the playing board depicts an outdoor scene with a dressage show of monkeys in various costumes with spectators behind wooden bars, in the corners more or less anthropomorphic images of four species of monkeys. 14 of the 30 fields showing monkeys in various costumes doing acrobatic stunts, and if you enter one of these fields you have to according to the rules restart from the beginning or pay a penalty. - Georg Nikolaus Renner (1803-1854) was an art dealer and publisher in Nuremberg since 1826. From 1837 Friedrich Schuster became his partner, from then on the company was called "Renner & Co" – therefore the present game must have been published before. An almost perfect copy of a finely illustrated example of a monkey theatre dice game, a subject which became very popular in the 19th century.

Plano (69x100 cm.). Letterpress text, engraved title and illustrated with an engraved ornamental border on thick paper without watermark.
€ 2.400
Impressively large and very rare French broadside table providing a detailed overview of the statistics on population, geography and economy of the 57 départemens of France for the year 1824. It does so in an extremely structured manner. Of each administrative region the precise geographic and topographic values are given, after which the specialization in natural or industrial productivity of these regions is described. For example, the département Calvados has "excellent horses, bestieux fat, grains, cider, cider brandy, flax, hemp" etc. etc. According to a contemporary review in Revue encyclopédique (1825), this table was considered especially useful to understand the importance of each of the départements, and… Read More

No printer's imprint, apparently as issued. The first paragraph states "The people of the Free States have so long yielded to the arrogant demands of the Slave Oligarchy of the South, that the latter has come to think it can carry any measure it seems fit, no matter how degrading it may be to the character of the free white men of the North." It finishes with "The New York Day Book, one of two papers in New York City that support James Buchanan, proposes to enslave poor AMERICANS, GERMANS and IRISH, who may fall into poverty and be unable to support their families. Here are the Day Book's exact words in speaking of the POOR WHITE PEOPLE: "Sell the parents of these children into SLAVERY. Los Angeles: Ruhl Samples, 1961. Flyer. 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Fine.. A fine copy of this 1961 flyer advertising a "Symposium on Freedom" presented by Ruhl Samples on June 24, 1961 at Hollywood High School, and featuring the eminent Austrian economist, Dr. Ludwig von Mises, who planned to speak on "Planned Chaos," and all for the incredible general admission price of one dollar. Mises (1881-1973) fled Europe in 1940 as a result of the German advance, emigrating to the United States where his scholarship was supported by the Rockefeller Foundation and William Volker Fund. Mises would become a visiting professor at New York University from 1945 until his retirement in 1969, and was among the founding members of the Mont Pelerin Society. Mises was a leading scholar within the Austrian School of economics and a leading light for generations of libertarian scholars. The flyer notes that future speakers would include James Burnham (conservative scholar and former Trotskyist), Dan Smoot (former FBI agent and… Read More

E.S Hayden. Splendid Daguerreotype Miniatures, Taken in Every Style, "His Miniatures are warranted not to be surpassed by any, for their richness of tone and life-like appearance; standing out in such bold relief, that they can be seen equally well in any light. All those wishing a perfect likeness of themselves, or their friends, would do well to call soon; confident that neither the Pictures nor the Price will fail to suit. . . "Original early letterpress broadside. 10 by 12 inches. Illustrated with decorated border. American Office Waterbury, CT (ca. 1850). Broadsides were used by itinerant practitioners who traveled from town to town in the mid-19th century taking portrait photographs of willing subjects. Daguerreotypes ceased to be used by the mid-1850s. This particular example belonged to E. S. Hayden, a well-travelled daguerreotypist in the Connecticut area. (See John S. Craig, Craig's Daguerreian Registry, Vol.1, page 172).Some mild toning; two very tiny holes not affecting text, remnants of… Read More

Description:
[Philadelphia: John Binns, 1828. Folio Broadside, 11" x 19." Printed in three columns, each separated by a rule. Macabre relief cuts of six black coffins within the title. Repaired horizontal and vertical closed tears on blank verso; several small holes have slight effect on several letters. Light toning. Good+ copy of a rare, dramatic broadside. "As we soon expect to have official documents in relation to the SIX MILITIA MEN, arrested, tried, and put to death, under the orders of General Andrew Jackson, this may not be an improper time to give to the public some of the particulars of the execution..." The source of those "particulars" is the account in John Binns's 'Democratic Press.' The primary weapon of the anti-Jackson forces was his alleged impetuous, unrestrained, martial personality, utterly unsuitable for the presidency of a democratic republic whose success required respect for constitutional checks and balances. Jackson's indefensible shooting of the six militia men after the Battle of… Read More
