Broadsides

Broadsides are large pieces of paper with text printed only on the front side, and they have historically had many different uses. Broadsides became particularly popular during the American Revolution, as they were used to quickly notify citizens and soldiers of changing events. Of course, broadsides are not only used for wartime proclamations. They have often used as community or government issued notices, as well as ways to advertise various entertainment events, particularly plays and operas. Another popular use for broadsides has been the printing of poetry, often accompanied by illustrations and the signature of the poet, and these items make great gifts and wonderful works of art.

Enschede, Zonen, Haarlem, Holland, portraying a Civil War encampment with wounded soldiers resting beneath trees. Underneath, the quote, taken from Whitman's "Democratic Vistas:, note 2. "The whole present system of the officering and personnel of the army and navy of these States, and the spirit and letter of their trebly-aristocratic rules and regulations, is a monstrous exotic, a nuisance and revolt, and belong here just as much as orders of nobility, or the Pope's council of cardinals. I say if the present theory of our army and navy is sensible and true, then the rest of America is an unmitigated fraud. Walt Whitman". Description:
Single leaf (270 x 212 mm) with copper-engraved plate (198 x 147 mm); very lightly foxed, 2 small paper flaws (of which the larger 8 mm), but overall a very good copy.
Very rare engraved broadside advertisement for a Venetian chocolatier. An attractive print, the advertisement offers 'chioccolatta d'ogni sorte' for a variety of prices, beneath an internal view of Guado's premises in Calle Larga in San Marco. Set within an ornamental rococo frame with the shop's 'la nave' sign depicted above, the scene shows a wealthy clientele in a spacious chocolate-house, drinking hot chocolate, with beans being ground in the foreground.
OCLC shows no copies of the engraving. The original copper plate survives in the Civica Raccolta delle Stampe Achille Bertarelli, in Milan.

Description:
Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania: Emerson, Smith & Co.. Very Good. Broadside. Broadside printed on Japanese paper and dated to the late 19th century. Broadside has rough edges and was folded multiple times. Broadside has many creases likely due to the statement printed in the upper left corner: "This is genuine Japanese paper. Press the sheet up into a ball, then straighten it out, and you will observe that it possesses remarkable properties, and a careful examination will interest you." Broadside has light toning, overall very good. Also included is a 8" x 10 ½" ordering form that has heavy toning and has been folded multiple times. This broadside promotes the double cross-cut narrow blade saw which was patented in 1883 by Emerson, Smith & Co., saw manufacturers. The broadside is likely dated to around 1887 as the proprietors note their 1887 hand book for saw prices. As of April 2022 one copy found at the Hagley Museum & Library in Delaware. ; 19" x… Read More
