London: John Lane Company/The Bodley Head, 1924. This is a very good hardcover copy in the original binding: brown paper-covered boards and cream cloth spine with black leather spine label, titled in gilt. Very clean inside and out. A few previous owner marks, one an interesting circular handstamp on the front pastedown identifying it as belonging to the De Forests at 640 Madison Avenue. Perhaps the family of Lockwood De Forest. His siblings were prominent in the art worlds of the late 19th and early 20th century. One became a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum, another was an art historian, and both lived in New York. The other mark is a neat but not legible handstamp, a name in script, that appears on the backs of several plates. Also a number on the spine which was covered with a tiny white square of paper. Very rare plate album by Irish landscape painter Frederick Calvert, complete with 24 "picturesque views" and in the original binding. Calvert moved to England in 1815 and, besides painting, produced a number of print albums and model books, a.o. The young artist's instructor (London, Hodgson and Co., 1823) and Rural scenery (London, Hodgson and Co., ca. 1825). He designed plates for Picturesque views ... in Staffordshire and Shropshire (Birmingham, William Emans, 1830-1831), and for A new and compendious history, of the county of Warwick (Birmingham, William Emans, 1830). Perhaps his most famous work was for The Isle of Wight illustrated (1846).

Slight splitting to surface of spine edge. Monogram bookplate to the inside board. Slight weakness to the binding at the title, and darkening to the page edges, but overall a very respectable copy. Portrait of Lady Bury and 6 engraved aquatints (complete). Sadlier 480: "This pious memorial to her husband (he died in 1832) was surely erected at Lady Charlotte's expense. the drawings are of considerable merit and beautifully reproduced. I include the book, despite its poetical character, for the sake of the drawings, and in order that its existence may be known." Having said that, there is a significant list of Royal Subscribers at the beginning of the book. xiv, 140 pages.

Very good copy of Richard Dagley's first foray into caricatureWith 26 comical illustrations from the life of a young wastrel in Regency England, most engraved by William Henry BrookesWith 2-page dedication, 3-page advertisement, 32-page essay Miscellaneous Observations on the Ludicrous in Art all by Dagley, and 4-page introduction in poetry and 180-page poem by Gaspey. According to the preface, it was the author of Flim-Flams! [Isaac D'Israeli], who encouraged Dagley to experiment with comedy. Later, "an ingenious friend" suggested he used the word "Taking" to stimulate further practice. The result is seen here in these commissioned illustrations for Thomas Gaspey's doggerel adventure.A young student, Tom Takeall, ignores his father's advice and sets off on a disastrous series of adventures. Spine gilt stamped (matching call number), with raised bands. Outer hinges rubbed. Library bookplate on front pastedowns. Pinhole library stamps on title pages, dedication page, and on one additional text-only leaf in each volume. Edges of leaves are toned; scattered foxing; dampstains in the margin of the first four plates in Vol. II. Tissue guards are present for all but a couple plates. A few leaves loose. Errata-page for both volumes at terminus of Vol. II. Ninety-six engraved plates, complete. Vol. I 98 ff.; Vol. II 102 ff. Folio. 14.25 x 10.5 inches. Scarce. Though ex-library, still an attractive set. Each of the portraits is followed by one or two pages of text describing the her family. Charlotte Gower, fl. 1860-1880, was a British botanical artist known for her collaboration with Robert Hogg.
Worthington George Smith (1835-1917) was an English cartoonist, book illustrator, archaeologist, plant pathologist, and mycologist. His botanical works include Gardener's Chronicle from 1869, Mushrooms and Toadstools (1879), Illustrations of the British Flora (1880), etc.

Very good copy of the rare first edition of John Hill's famous herbal with contemporary hand colour.
With engraved allegorical frontispiece showing Health receiving tribute from Asia, Africa and America by Samuel Wale engraved by Henry Roberts, engraved coat of arms of the Duke of Northumberland on dedication, and 75 engraved botanical plates all finely coloured in a contemporary 18th-century hand.
The 75 plates show approximately 1,500 species of plants, flowers, herbs, vegetables, fruits, ferns, mushrooms, both native to Britain and foreign, all in distinctive 18th-century colour.

Mary Ann Burnett was the sister of Gilbert Burnett, Professor of Botany at King's College London and the Apothecaries' Society, Chelsea. Mary was an artist and worked as "a colourer of drawings and maps." Her brother's sudden death at age 35 in 1835 left her (and her mother) in "utter destitution." In 1836, the London Medical and Surgical Journal launched an appeal on their behalf with donations accepted at several banks and other locations in London.
