London: Macmillan and Co., 1905. This is an about very good hardcover two volume set with very clean covers, but some sporadic foxing to text and some plates. A number of illustrations have acidic tissue guards which have spotted. Top page-edges gilt. Gilt titles on dark green cloth spines. A former private Welsh owner's decorative bookplate in each volume. Many gravure illustrations + frontispiece. 9" high X 6" wide, 512 & 493 pages. 1908. No Binding. Very Good/No Jacket. Hugh Thomson. This is the original watercolour, by Hugh Thomson, used for the picture of Eashing in chapter XI of the book by Eric Parker. The image is 11 X 8.5" and is framed and glazed by Edward Walker & Co of Coleraine, N.I., where Hugh Thomson originated. The image is clean and tidy although the inside of the glass has some spots on it and the picture would benefit from reglazing. This is a heavy item and will attract additional P&P if sent outside the UK so kindly contact me for a P&P quotation before ordering. Frame size 20 X 15". This is the original watercolour, by Hugh Thomson, used for the picture of Eashing in chapter XI of the book by Eric Parker.

Five volumes: each volume consists of an illustrated lithographed title page and 36 numbered plates, printed on colored papers; 185 humourous, numbered lithographed plates in total. Now bound in one volume, recent brown morocco spine with gilt lettering and five raised bands, on modern marbled boards, gilt page edges all around. 22.5 cm. First edition. Some of the plates have been trimmed slightly. Plate 1 of Vol 4, mis-numbered in the plate as No. 4. Generally very good, occasional browning on a few plates.

London: Elliot Stock, 1898. A superb example of a vellucent binding. Cedric Chivers (1853 -1929) of Bath revived the technique of painting under vellum. Chivers would execute his paintings on paper which was covered with a translucent skin to form the binding, The covers were then lightly tooled with gold. It is rare to find such a finely preserved fine binding. Signed by Chivers. In 'Days and Hours in a Garden', 19th century Scotish artist and writier, Eleanor Vere Boyle (1825 -1916) takes us through the months of the year, the cherry blossoms, the rooks, the wild ivy etc. etc., reminiscent of a modest walled-garden 'Walden' by Thoreau. Very good copy of this classic of 18th century entomology, the first book on British beetles.

Complete with 42 finely hand-coloured copperplates of beetles, arrayed on the pages like specimens in a tray in a cabinet of curiosities.

The plates show some previously unpublished beetle and bug species, many in their tiny original size. The European stag beetle, minotaur, dung beetles, carrion, leaf and weevil beetles, click beetles, tumbling flower beetles, tiger beetles, water beetles, longhorns, carabids, ladybirds, and many others are shown in beautiful colors in 535 intricate illustrations.
