London: X3 Posters RARE exhibition poster, no date, circa 1982- 1990, by Ken Meharg and Bob Linney, who ran the poster operation for Birmingham Arts Laboratory or Arts Lab, an experimental arts centre in Birmingham, until 1982. Posters from that era were featured in an international touring exhibition by the British Council between 1981 and 1985, and were the subject of an exhibition by Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in 1998. Strong, whose "The Sacred River: An Approach to James Joyce" was dedicated to Turner. Very Good, lacking the dust wrapper, the paper covered boards with rubs and tears along fore edges. The 12 portraits feature Albert Einstein, T. S. Eliot, George Bernard Shaw, Walter De La Mare and John Galsworthy among other contemporary notables. A fine archive of three original drawings by the English "mouth artist" John Carter, two letters by his biographer, a copy of the revised edition of Carter's Memoir, and related materials. A fine collection of three original drawings by John Carter (31 July 1815 - 2 June 1850), an English mouth artist, together with a memoir and two autograph letters discussing Carter's work by William James Dampier, Carter's first biographer. The collection also includes a heliotype after a drawing by Carter as well as a list of subscribers to Dampier's memoir. The small collection was apparently presented by Dampier to one of his friends. Original drawings by carter are rare, as most "of his work, now widely dispersed and probably unrecognized, is of course only known from nineteenth century reproductions" (Trevor Disley) John Carter was born in Coggeshall, Essex, "of humble parents", as Dampier notes.
