It invites contemplations of differences among insects that appear, at first glance, similar. Goodale shows the intricate silhouettes and subtle markings that distinguish Edwards' hairstrea, Clayton's copper, hessel's hairstreak, and Katahdin Arctic. The butterfly forms are cut out and placed on decorative backgrounds inspired by their individual host plants. In the history of art, the butterfly symbolizes resurrection, and Goodale captures this hopeful quality. The insects pop up and hover over the pages, vibrating with life despite their endangered status.

With title page in red and black ink; preface; text in 3 books with 2 plates of bird traps bound in, and 2 tables which serve as early identification keys; an appendix; summary of falconry; index and 78 plates of birds (including the dodo) at the rear. This is the first English edition translated from the original Latin which was published in 1676, four years after Willughby's death by his friend and colleague John Ray. It marks one of the first attempts to take a rational, scientific approach to classifying birds. It is a matter of debate, and current research, as to whether Willughby or Ray played a greater part in its development. Ray supervised the publication. ELEAZAR ALBIN (1690 – 1742) was an English naturalist and watercolorist illustrator who wrote and illustrated a number of books including A Natural History of English Insects (1720), A Natural History of Birds (1731–38) and The Natural History of Spiders and other Curious Insects (1736). Nothing is known of Albin's early life, though he may have been German-born; he claimed to have been in Jamaica in 1701. In 1708 he is known to have been married and living in Piccadilly, London. Albin taught watercolor painting before being instructed in natural history by silk weaver and naturalist Joseph Dandridge. Henry Constantine Richter (1821-1902) was an English zoological illustrator who produced a large number of handcoloured lithographs of birds and mammals, mainly for the scientific books of the renowned English 19th century ornithologist John Gould. Gould was fascinated by hummingbirds and exhibited his extensive collection of 100s of these tiny birds in taxidermy cases at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. The print (51cm x 34cm) is in very good condition, with very slight age toning overall, mounted in a cream-coloured French matt (71cm x 54cm).
