SIGNED. 723pp. Thick quarto [26 cm] Green textured cloth over boards with gilt stamped titles on the spine and front cover. Color frontispiece illustration with a tissue-guard printed in black. Very good. Mildly rubbed and bumped at the extremities. The first several pages have a few names from previous owners. The pages are clean. Illustrated with Paintings by Allan Brooks, George Miksch Sutton, Roger Tory Peterson and Terence Michael Shortt. Warmly inscribed on the date of publication by the author on the half title page: "To the _______, who live in the paradise of Cave Canyon, this volume is inscribed with the esteem and best wishes by the author who is grateful for their aid in his mountain studies - Herbert Brandt, November 10, 1951, Publication date, Copy number 22." He has personally numbered the copy number 22.

The Leyden Museum, Leyden, Netherlands, 1889; Color lithograph of the reclusive Liberian Maned Owl (Bubo Letti Butt. or Jubula Letti Butt.), found only in small sections of lowland West African rainforests from Liberia to Republic Of Congo. An original plate from Notes From The Leyden Museum, official zoological periodical of the Reijksmuseum of Natural History, Vol. XI, No. 1, January, 1889, the issue in which Buttikofer first described and named the species. Drawn and lithographed by Theodoor Van Hoytema (1863-1917), renowned for his realistic natural history studies for the Reijkmuseum, as well as for his later art nouveau style commercial work. Excellent condition. Clean, bright, colors vivid. Archivally hinged and matted acid free with 100% rag museum board, ready for framing. Sheet size 6" x 9 3/8", window 5 1/2" x 8 1/4", outside matte dimensions 11" x 14". A beautiful and scarce print of an uncommon avian subject.

William Matthew Hart (1830-1908) was a bird illustrator and lithographer who worked for John Gould from 1851. He began by making the patterns for the lithographic plates for Gould's monograph on Hummingbirds, as well as working on The Birds of Great Britain with Henry Constantine Richter. By 1870 Hart had become Gould's chief artist and lithographer. After Gould's death in 1881, Hart was employed by Richard Bowdler-Sharpe of the British Museum to complete Gould's work on the Birds of New Guinea and to produce illustrations for Sharpe's great work Monograph on the Birds of Paradise.Large folio size lithograph (52cm x 34cm) mounted in a cream-coloured French matt (74cm x 54cm).

Wrapper in good condition with a sunned spine area and missing a "V" shaped section to its top. The wrapper is dusty with minor wear to its extremities.
