A rare and rather unique 18th-century Dutch Bible. Known as the 'Little Print Bible', this Bible is a fully illustrated small volume, where each page of the Bible is an engraving of Bible scenes designed to teach Dutch children how to memorize scripture passages and proverbs. First published in 1720, this book proved to be quite popular and saw numerous reissues throughout the 18th-century.

1696 Greek BIBLE Critica Sacra New Testament Language Study Latin Leigh Middoch
Edward Leigh was a 17th-century English author who is known for his books of commentary on theology, philology, and English history. However, his most important and widely recognized as best work was his first 'Critica Sacra', a collection of observations on the Greek texts used in the New Testament.
In 1679, Henricus a Middoch translated both the Old and New Testament portions of the 'Critica Sacra' into Latin. This 1696 edition contains the notes and commentary by contributors including Middoch and Johannes Heeser.

A rare and desirable 17th-century edition of 'The Book of Psalms.' This English printing, published by the Church of England, features the metrical version derived by Thomas Sternhold and John Hopkins. This 1792 London edition was published by Jarvis and contains two versions of the Psalms – the traditional metered Sternhold and Hopkins version and then a 'new version' of each Psalm written to be sung to hymn tunes in English churches.

Interestingly, this particular example features a rare, fine binding with 'JHS' embossed on the front cover.

1880 BIBLE Gallery Gustave Dore ART Illustrated Old/New Testament Bible Scenes

Gustave Dore first began publishing Bible illustrations in 1865 in France, but because of their immense popularity, they would see reissues for decades and all over the western world. Most of these large, multi-volume Bibles, that contained nearly 250 engravings, were too heavy and expensive for the common buyer, so smaller products were published that featured only illustrations and no Bible text. These became the 'Dore Bible Gallery' editions.

Dore's Bible illustrations had a direct effect on early 20th-century biblical based films, drawing influence and costume design from Dore's portrayal of Bible characters. This late 19th-century edition features a frontispiece portrait of Doré.

Spine compartments ruled and lettered in gilt. Ronald Knox's Monsignor coat of arms with the motto "Lux in Tenebris Lucet" (Light shines in the darkness) stamped in gilt to the centre of the front board. Single gilt ruled border on all the boards. All edges gilt. Double ruled border on the turn-ins. Marbled endpapers. A little darkening to the spine but overall a fine and beautiful presentation of this translation. --- A controversial figure, Knox converted from Anglicanism to Catholicism in 1917. His major work was this translation of the Saint Jerome Latin Vulgate bible which he started in 1936. The translation was finally published, including the New Testament in a single volume, in 1949.

A scarcely printed and unique folio variant of "The Book of Common Prayer." This 1904 authorized first American edition of the prayer book of King Edward VII, outlines the Church of England's order of rituals, rites, ceremonies, as well as the administration of the sacraments. Additionally, the Psalms of David are included in a format designed to accommodate corporate song.

This edition was published under a joint arrangement involving the Essex House Press, the Guild of Handicraft, and M. Walter Dunne of New York. With intricate designs and typography by Charles Robert Ashbee, the book includes blue silk moiré endpapers, a woodcut frontispiece, title page with a woodcut border, historiated headpieces, initials, and illustrated tables.
