Description:
1838 1ed Shipwreck of Stirling Castle Australia James Fraser Voyages Illustrated

The Stirling Castle was a Scottish ship who is remembered for its fateful voyage where it wrecked near Queensland, Australia. Commanded by James Fraser, this ship was on an excursion toward Singapore where they ran aground on the reefs. Those that survived the wreck were taken into camps by local Aboriginal people of the Butchulla tribes.

'The Shipwreck of the Stirling Castle' is a rare account of the wreck and the events of the survivors. Written by John Curtis, this book describes the tortures endured by the survivors, including Fraser's wife Eliza. In addition to describing the wreck and the local tribes, Curtis describes the landscape of Australia and Amboyana Islands, account of 'kangaroo dogs' (dingo), influence of the British government and British missionaries in Australia, along with impressive full-page engravings depicting events of the voyage. One notable engraving is an illustration of Captain Fraser being… Read More

Description:
London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1863. First English edition. Very Good-. This first London edition was preceded by an edition published in Auckland in the same year Both editions are considered quite scarce First published anonymously in 1863, this classic book recounts the experiences of Frederick Edward Maning (c1811â€"83), an Anglo-Irish trader who emigrated to Tasmania with his family as a boy and later relocated to New Zealand A self-styled 'Pakeha-Maori' ('Pakeha' is the Maori word for a white New Zealander), Manning acquired land and settled down with a Maori woman, occupying a tenuous position between the two cultures Observing that the old Maori way of life was rapidly disappearing due to the increased European presence in New Zealand, Maning endeavored to record Maori customs and material culture before all knowledge of them disappeared Old New Zealand is a mixture of history, autobiography and anecdote, and the author insists all the incidents and people described are real The language is… Read More

Description:
London: Printed for W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1773,Contemporary full mottled calf gilt, a very attractive set.
FIRST EDITION, 3 volumes, 52 engraved plates, charts and maps (most folding or double-page, including "A Chart of the Straights of Magellan")
Volume I contains the voyages of Byron, Carteret and Wallis, with the discovery of Tahiti, and volumes II-III contain Hawkesworth's edited account of Lieutenant Cook's voyage (he was only promoted to Captain on his return). Cook's instructions for this first voyage were to observe the transit of Venus from Tahiti and to carry on John Byron's survey and examination of the seas between Cape Horn and New Holland, but they did not extend to searching for Terra Australis. He did, however, add more than 5,000 miles of coastline to Admiralty charts for Tahiti, Australia and the Great Barrier Reef, and New Zealand, which he circumnavigated.

Description:
Atchison, Kansas: E. W. Howe, 1913. Seven consecutive monthly issues (February-August 1913) of E. W. HOWE'S MONTHLY bound together without original covers. Each issue has 64 pages except for April, which has 56 pages. Olive-gray buckram covered boards, with gilt title ("Travel Notes") on the spine. These seven issues contain Howe's narrative, musings, and observations during his travels in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and several ports on the east coast of Africa during the Spring of 1913. Included are 3 brief letters signed by Howe (1 tipped in and 2 laid in), all to Charles A. Goddard, publisher of the Fayetteville (W. Va.) Tribune and Free Press. Although Goddard did not put his name on any of the issues, the presence of the 3 letters strongly suggests that he was responsible for selecting these "travel" issues and having them bound. The bound volume is in about very good condition: clean and tight, with rice-paper repaired tears on several pages.. SIGNED.… Read More
