1838 Japanese Katana Samurai Old Sword Inscription Koto Illustrated 9v Woodblock
An interesting 19th century Edo woodblock-print of 'Old Sword Inscriptions.' The term 'Koto' (古刀) or 'Old Sword' is a reference to swords created between 900AD and 1596AD. These are considered the pinnacle of Japanese Sword craftsmanship. The typical sword of that period was the tachi, which were later shortened to make early Katanas.
This 9-volume set from 1838 was originally written in 1792 by Ogi Iori as a complete list of appraisals of the swords and their makers. This work is significant in its inclusion of detailed workmanship of Masamune, the greatest swordsmith of Japan, and his disciples Saeki Norishige (佐伯則重) and Gō Yoshihiro (江義弘). Michael Symes was an 18th-century Irish diplomat most remembered for his first mission to Burma in 1795. This expedition, which was initiated by the Governor-General of India, allowed Symes to reside at Rangoon and protect the interests of British subjects and improve political relations with India. The ODNB notes this work as
'the first detailed account of the country written in English. It addressed the history, geography, culture, and economics of Burma.'
This work is also notable for a description of the Irawaddy River – the first reliable charting of the river as well as reports on Burmese costumes, customs, art, architecture, and plants.

This hardcover book is in good condition with some wear to its covers edges and corners. The two boards are held together by their original ribbons. The binding is tight and the book is complete with no loose pages. There is some minor foxing to the paper and some staining to the last couple of pages. The book is 30 pages in total with 15 pages of thin paper with print and 15 pages of art prints. All of the prints are in amazing condition. Each print measures approximately 5 inches by 3.5 inches.
