PLAN, SECTION and ELEVATION of the POO-TA-LA of TEMPLE of the LAMA at ZHE-HOL in TARTARYThis monumental temple which looks more like a fortified tower was drawn by HW Parish in 1793.This antique original copper plate engraving is from Sir George Leonard Staunton's atlas folio of prints to accompany "An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China . Taken chiefly from the papers of His Excellency the Earl of Macartney". The work was published in London by G.Nicol in 1797. George Macartney, 1st Earl Macartney (1737-1806) was dispatched to Beijing in 1792 travelling via Madeira, Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, the Cape of Good Hope and Indonesia. He was accompanied by George Staunton, and a retinue of suitably impressive size, including Stauntonâ s 11-year-old son who was nominally the ambassadorâ s page. On the embassy's arrival in China it emerged that the 11-year-old was the only European member of the embassy able to speak Mandarin, and thus the only one able to… Read More

Description:
1783 Eboracum YORK Cathedral Illustrated England Drake Architecture Windows
Francis Drake, not to be confused with the famous explorer of the same name, was an 18th-century English historian who is best-remembered for his book 'Eboracum'. Eboracum was the name given to the ancient city built by ancient Rome in what is now modern-day York. Having been fascinated by ancient manuscripts, Drake began compiling a history of the city of York focusing on the cathedral and city history. The popularity of the book propelled Drake to publish an abridged version of the work focusing solely on the cathedral itself.
This 1783 edition of Drake's history of York Cathedral includes lists of archbishops and numerous folding engraved views of the cathedral including impressive views of the façade and interior floor plan.

Rare copy of this first edition. Book and unclipped dj are in 'As New' condition; no faults. First edition, presumed first printing as no other editions or printings are shown on the copyright page. XIX + 407 pages with b&w photos throughout.

From the dj: "This is the first book in English to reveal the extent to which modern architecture flourished in Romania - and is still visible as a neglected and almost forgotten past amid the contradictions of present-day Bucharest.

Luminita Machedon and Ernie Scoffham focus on Bucharest between the two world wars. They show how the Dadaist Marcel Janco and others influenced the adoption of progressive policies, including the city's Master Plan of 1934, which became one of the most forward-looking plans in Europe and served the city's administration until well after the Second World War."

"Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."
This comprehensive volume documents for the first time twenty-one châteaux and pavilions commissioned by Louis XIV, France's great builder-king. These royal buildings, and over forty architectural ornaments enriching their gardens, are illustrated in breathtaking watercolors by authors Andrew Zega and Bernd H. Dams. Depicted are several of the most influential structures in all of Western architecture, such as the palace of Versailles and the magnificent lost complex at Marly, which contemporaries deemed a veritable "Paradise on Earth." The authors give full attention to unrealized projects and depict completed structures not as they stand today, if indeed they stand at all, but as they were originally designed by the leading architects… Read More
