460 pages with maps, plates, figures, photographs, illustrations, drawings, tables, appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Inscribed by the author. First edition. In Greek with extensive English section.Manika was an ancient town in Euboea Greece, dating to the Early Helladic period II (2800–2200 BC). The settlement covered an area of 50–80 hectares, and was inhabited by 6,000–13,500-15,000 people according to estimates. It was one of the largest settlements of the Bronze Age in Greece. The prehistoric site of Manika, 5 km. north of Chalkis, has been known since the beginning of the century when the then director of the Chalkis Museum, G. Papavasileiou, excavated 50 EH tombs. In 1955 in the course of surface reconnaissance in Euboea, D. Theocharis confirmed the existence of a small important prehistoric settlement on the peninsula (sector III). This settlement continued below sea-level to a considerable depth and presented thick… Read More

Description:
1671 Catacombs ROME Subterranea Aringhus & Bosio Illustrated Roman Archaeology

Antonio Bosio, an early 17th-century Italian historian, was known as one of the leading spelunkers of his time. His searching of the catacombs of Rome lead to an incredible and highly influential book on Roman history and antiquities "Roma Sotterranea". This book contains descriptions and illustrations of Roman cemeteries and catacomb findings, artifacts, sarcophaguses, and cave wall inscriptions and murals.

Following the successes of Bosio's work, historian Paulus Aringhus published a Latin translation that proved to be just as popular as the original. This 1671 printing of Aringhus's "Roman Subeterranea" includes numerous full-page and in-text engravings and was published in Arnhem, Netherlands – a city not known for its publishing.

Book cover like new - pages clean, bright and unmarked – spine like new.
No dust jacket issued with this book.
Proceeds benefit Friends of the Library; books sold are NOT ex-library.
"Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."
Despite the cover and title page, the series is the Catalog of Anomalies and is devoted to documenting phenomena in a range of fields that science cannot explain. This is the first volume to concern archaeology. Mere size or mass is not sufficient for mention; the criteria include high degrees of innovation, precocious use of technology and science, apparent lack of purpose, and the unknown identity of the builders. Findings here are used as evidence that the Vikings ventured well beyond Newfoundland, that extensive pre-Columbian contacts existed between the Old and New Worlds, and that vastly superior civilizations preceded our own.

As the title well explains, the Systema Brahmanicum by the Indologist Paulinus of St. Bartholomew - valuable compendium of Brahmanism - is closely based on the collection of Indica reperta from the famous Borgia Museum in Velletri, profusely illustrated by the engravings. The volume, therefore, can be browsed as a kind of 'exegetical catalog' of the Hindu collection. The ancient Borgia Museum in Velletri, formed between the 17th and 18th centuries by the Roman branch of the Borgia family, was greatly enriched and enlarged in the second half of the 18th century by Cardinal Stefano Borgia (1731 – 1804), a man of vast culture who was a scholar of history and ethnology. The Museum, famous throughout Europe for the variety and the rarity of the reperta as well as… Read More

Translated from the Egyptian with an introduction and appendix by Battiscombe G. Gunn. 75, [1] + [4] ad pp. 16.5x11.8 cm (6½x4¾"), cloth. First edition, 1906. Very scarce.
About this book
Very rare printing of ancient Egyptian wisdom text, which many scholars deem to be the "oldest books in the world." The Maxims of Ptahhotep. Ptahhotep was the city administrator and vizier (first minister) during the reign of Djedkare Isesi in the 5th Dynasty (late 25th century BC and early 24th century BC). He is credited with authoring The Instruction of Ptahhotep, an early piece of Egyptian "wisdom literature" meant to instruct young men in appropriate behavior. Ptahhotep's grandson, Ptahhotep Tshefi, is traditionally credited with being the author of the collection of wise sayings known as The Maxims of Ptahhotep, whose opening lines attribute authorship to the vizier Ptahhotep: Instruction of the Mayor of the city, the Vizier Ptahhotep, under the Majesty of King lsesi. They take the form of advice and… Read More
