New York: McDonnell Bros., 1866 Book. Fair. Hardcover. First Edition. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. Large brown two-volume Civil War book set with a gilt cover title. Five inch top spine cover chip and a one and one half inch bottom spine chip to volume 1. Volume 2 has a top chip/slight gouge at the spine top and a small chip at the bottom spine. Covers with light to moderate worming. Shaken and cracked bindings with a few loose pages and some old taped tears. The first 8 pages (from the title page) to the second volume are loose from binding and present. Fair minus to Fair plus condition. About 16-1/2 x 12 with 836 total pages. Illustrated, plus maps. Rare two-volume Civil War set (1866 and 1868)! .

The cover of this book has much wear. A binding was added later as well as pads for the corner's of the book. the previous owners names are written on the inside of the front cover and on the top of the third blank page. The pages are yellowing and tanning. The edges of most of the pages are worn. This is a rare book and dates 147 years old.."There are three books which ought to be found in every household - the Bible, an English dictionary, and a Bible dictionary. 1565 Charles IX Great Ordinance of 1561 France French LAW & Government Chalard

In 1561, when Charles IX ascended the French throne, he led a series of 151 articles compromising the Great Ordinance of 1561. French scholar Joachim Chalard published his own commentary and perspective on the ordinances, notes that deal primarily with the corruption within the government. He also discusses the deplorable acts of Catholic clergy, unlawful taxation, trade regulations, the nobility, and the use of military.

This 1565 edition is considered exceptionally rare. According to Baudrier, the Clement Baudin editions were much scarcer than those published by Giochard or Rigaud.

A first American edition account of George Mivart's reaction to Darwinian naturalism.

George Mivart was a 19th-century English biologist known for his attempts to merge the beliefs of Darwinian evolution and the Catholic Church – curiously, he was condemned by everyone! Mivart held views that were contrary to other scientists, including his view on the language of animals – he states:
"Since we are unable to converse with brutes, we can but divine and infer from their gestures, motions, and the sounds they emit, what may be the nature of their highest psychical powers."
Mivart discounted many of Darwin's own studies including his "hasty attribution of human qualities to brutes, on account of certain superficial resemblances." (Radick, p.69).

Cornelius Hazart was a 17th-century Dutch Jesuit priest and controversialist writer. His "Ecclesiastical History of the Whole World" delivered on the 'controversial' side of church history, as Hazart explored some of the most detestable acts of the church including tortures, imprisonments, wars on religion, and brutal executions, such as drowning, hangings, beheadings, and burnings.

This 1683 Dutch printing is taken from the first Antwerp edition from 1667. This book covers church history throughout Europe, including Germany, France, Netherlands, and England,

1754 Electricity Phenomena Experiments Nollet Physics Illustrated Science RARE

Jean-Antoine Nollet was an 18th-century French physicist who made incredible contributions to world of physical science. Perhaps his best work came with from his experiments with electricity and his displays of static electricity. In his book 'Electrical Phenomena', Nollet describes many of these experiments – this 1754 edition is complete with folding engravings illustrating Nollet's discoveries.
