Description:
1631 1ed Sleidan Key of History GREECE Rome Babylon Persia Alexander

Johannes Sleidanus was a 16th-century historian who is best remembered for his commentary and analysis of the Protestant Reformation. He collected as all papers and manuscripts concerning the Reformation to which he had access (particularly those of Martin Luther) and edited them as part of his 'Commentary on State, Religion, and Republic'. And while his contributions to the growth of popularity of the Reformation was his greatest work, he also published a book on the history of the world.

Known as 'The Key of History', this book is a methodical history of four the most important kingdoms of the world – Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome. He describes important world events, beginning with Flood of Noah, through Roman emperors, the reign of Alexander the Great, and much more.

Description:
1654 BEAUTIFUL Lucius Florus History of Rome LIVY Gruterus Ab Urbe Condita
"Men of outstanding ability are more likely to lack the power of controlling their own people than of defeating an enemy in battle."
― Livy, The History of Rome
Florus was a Roman historian who lived during the 2nd-century AD. His history of Rome was collected by Livy, and mainly focuses on the foundation of Rome though the end of the B.C. era. The work is considered somewhat inaccurate, especially compared to Livy's much more popular and famous 'History of Rome'. This work lacks details of chronology and geography.
This 1654 of Florus's 'History'
is supplemented with commentary from scholars Janus Gruterus.

Description:
1747 ROME Nieupoort Senate Roman Law Customs Mythology Cicero Latin Utrecht
Willem Nieupoort, a 17th-century Dutch historian, wrote 'Rituum' as a supplement to traditional Roman antiquarian studies. He outlined various aspects of Roman orders including the establishment of Rome and the Roman Senate, the offices of religious priests, liturgical rites, and the importance of games and amphitheater entertainments. There is also an important section focused on the Roman army as well as a section on the private lives of Romans, exploring their clothing, customs, coins, and celebrations.
Nieupoort was a well-known and respected jurist of his time, thus much of his perspective in this work involves Roman law. He acknowledges the importance of Cicero, Plato, and other philosophers, but also mentions the Roman focus on mythology.

1686 Suetonius Twelve Caesars Julius Caesar Caligula Nero ROME Amsterdam Boxhorn

"Nothing is more unpredictable than the mob, nothing more obscure than public opinion, nothing more deceptive than the whole political system."
― Suetonius, 'The Twelve Caesars'

Suetonius was a 1st-century Roman historian who is most remembered by his important set of biographies of twelve successive Roman rulers from Julius Caesar to Domitian. "The Lives of Twelve Caesars" or "De Vita Caesarum" is still considered one of the primary sources on Roman history and discusses important facets of the end of the Roman Republic.
"Twelve Caesars" covers the lives of Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Galba, Otho, Vitellus, Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian, and is the first work to offer insights to some of the lesser-known aspects of these important Roman figures – such as Julius Caesar's struggle with epilepsy. The extent of what is culturally known about Caligula comes almost exclusively from… Read More

The Romans were the first great builders of bridges in the western world. Professor O'Connor, a civil engineer and expert in bridge construction, has examined a very large number of those bridges that still remain all over the Roman empire. In this book he presents a thorough listing and description of all known bridges, in many cases illustrating the construction of the bridges by his own photographs and sketches. Introductory chapters place the bridges in their geographical and historical contexts, with detailed maps of the empire-wide system of Roman roads and discussion of how these came to be constructed, and an investigation of the technology available to the Romans.
