This book gives a history of the cities along the route paying special attention to the American Revolution and wars with Indians, and briefly mentioning the Civil War.
This 1875 first edition includes numerous illustrations and engravings of railcars, scenic views, stations, early city and rural scenes along the routes, mileage between cities and junctions, and two maps showing the route extending from New York as far as Erie, and Allegheny, Pennsylvania.

"Memoirs of Andrew Sherburne" is the narrative of the author's service in the Continental Navy in 1779 at the age of 14, and his being taken prisoner by the British only to later be released after falling ill. Andrew Sherburne went on to become a Baptist Minister and includes many Christian themes throughout his tale of imprisonment during the American Revolution at Mill prison in Plymouth England. Sherburne includes information on voyages made during the revolution, treatment as a prisoner of war, suffering on the Jersey prison ship, and being discharged at the peace of 1783.

Franklin Benjamin Gowen (1836-1889) served as president of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad from 1870 to 1884 and again briefly in 1886. During his presidency, he was responsible for the railroad illegally running its own mining operations and for violent and indiscriminate attacks on the Molly Maguires and mineworkers in general. In this speech, Gowen argued against aspects of a bill to control railroad freight discrimination, proposed by Willis James Hulings (1850-1924), representative from Venango County in the Pennsylvania legislature. The text of the bill in included here; it was enacted. Scarce.
