Quarto (10 1/4" x 6 3/4") bound in original publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering to spine facsimile signature to front cover. First edition limited to 750 copies. When the authors decided upon the production of this work, it was agreed that it should contain every bibliographical detail known to them, relating to the first issue o the first editions of thirteen important books written by Charles Dickens, and published in periodical form. The object was to present these details in such a manner that the student, as well as the experienced collector, might have a standard book of reference, which could be relied upon to put an end to the uncertainty still associated with the expression -- "original parts as issued." The authors examined the collection housed in the John F Dexter library, where confirmation of the material was to be found. The magnitude of the material contained in the thirteen works,… Read More

1881 George Cruikshank Comic ART Almanack Caricature Thackeray Illustrated Humor

George Cruikshank was one of England's best and most notable 19th-century caricaturists and book illustrators.

The 'Comic Almanack' is a collection of 19th-century tales and poems etched by George Cruikshank. This work includes the works of famed authors such as Thackeray, Albert Smith, the Brothers Mayhew, Robert Brough and Gilbert A'Beckett.
"In 1835 Cruikshank issued the first number of the 'Comic Almanack,' with a dozen 'right merrie' cuts (etchings) 'pertaining to the months' by himself, and a few minor embellishments. Sometimes the letterpress was supplied by distinguished contributors. To the issue for 1839 Thackeray contributed 'Stubb's Calendar, or the Fatal Boots,' to be followed in 1840 by 'Barber Cox, and the Cutting of his Comb,' afterwards called 'Cox's Diary.'" (DNB).
This undated edition contains hundreds of illustrations, many of which are folding.

Description:
1887 Golden Legend of the CROSS Medieval Woodcut Illustrations Veldener Caxton

A beautiful, 1887 facsimile edition of Veldener's printing of 'Golden Legend on the Finding of the Holy Cross'. This work includes William Caxton's English translation as well as 64 impressive illustrations from Fisher fresco paintings from the Chapel of Trinity Church in Stratford England. The original 15th-century work was written by an unknown author; though, the decorative Veldener printing was much desired. The illustrations are known to be reproduced from the 1483 original edition of the 'Golden Legend'.

Notes and prefatory material of John Ashton and Baring Gould. Ashton covers the legend itself, depicting types of miracles, raising people from the dead, healing the sick, and oddly making 'black people become white'!
This 1887 edition was published by Unwin and bound in a decorative binding, in the style of 15th-century masters.

1834 Handwritten Mathematics Manuscript WINE & BEER Apothecary Drugs Stocks
An interesting handwritten manuscript of mathematics lessons, theories, and problems. The lessons cover mathematical concepts such as subtraction, proportion, multiplication, and division, including an interesting section entitled 'The Rule of Three'. The lessons are then applied in a variety of practical questions, such as converting measurements between apothecary, troy, and avoirdupois weights and measures; understanding billing, expenses, and cost of services rendered; use of currency; brokerage of stocks; and many more. These practical questions often feature goods and services students would frequently interact with on a daily basis during this time period, such as the cost of ingredients for wine and beer; understanding how many garments could be made from a given length of cloth; travel distances over time; and cost of tobacco, to name just a few.

Donato Giannotti was a 16th-century Florentine political writer who is best known for his dialogue on the Republic of Venice. 'Dialogi de Republica Venetorum' was first published in 1540 and was one of the best sources for the history of Venice through the mid-1500s. Description:
1886 BIBLE Gallery Gustave Dore ART Illustrated Old/New Testament Bible Scenes

Gustave Dore first began publishing Bible illustrations in 1865 in France, but because of their immense popularity, they would see reissues for decades and all over the western world. Most of these large, multi-volume Bibles, that contained nearly 250 engravings, were too heavy and expensive for the common buyer, so smaller products were published that featured only illustrations and no Bible text. These became the 'Dore Bible Gallery' editions.

Dore's Bible illustrations had a direct effect on early 20th-century biblical based films, drawing influence and costume design from Dore's portrayal of Bible characters.
