Charles Waterton (1781-1865) was a famous English naturalist, explorer, taxidermist, pioneering conservationist and overall polymath interested in anything and everything.
first visited British Guiana with his father in 1804. He subsequently returned on 4 occasions between 1812 and 1824, during which time he travelled extensively in the Guianas and across the northern part of South America. He was one of the first to observe the birds and animals of the tropics. He described his discoveries in this book 'Wanderings in South America,' which inspired Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace.

In the summer of 1858, Darwin felt pressured by other scientific research, to publish his evolutionary ideas, before others who had similar findings. He began writing according to his big book of 'Natural Selection' – the source for 'Variation.' According to Freeman,
"This represents the only section of Darwin's big book on the origin of species which was published in his lifetime and corresponds to its first two chapters." (Freeman)

When completed, 'Variation' was by far Darwin's biggest book to date. In fact, when he sent it to the printer, he wrote a personal letter to Murray apologizing for the size.

Original green cloth with bevelled edges, the spine and upper boards gilt lettered and decorated, with blind-stamped decorations to the rear boards. All edges gilt. The cloth lightly marked in places, with some bruising to the spine ends. A touch of light very occasional spotting. The binding of volume eight cracked and splitting at the front hinge and most gatherings quite tender as a result. The half title and title page of volume six detached and laid-in, and five further volumes exhibit some tenderness to the front hinges and one a short tear to the upper gutter.
