Description:
1772 Bible & Expository Notes New Testament Commentary English William Burkitt

William Burkitt was a 17th-century English Bible commentator who was known for his Protestant views of evangelism. Following his death in the early 18th-century, one of Burkitt's most important books was published for the first time. 'Expository Notes on the New Testament' was one of the best supplemental guides to reading the New Testament – it includes the actual text of Biblical verses and immediate commentary on those passages. He also provides historical context for the books, letters, and sermons given in the New Testament.

This 1772 huge folio edition includes a frontispiece of Burkitt with a prayer to be read before reading the bible.

Description:
1790 FAMOUS Edward Gibbon Decline & Fall of Roman Empire Caesar ROME 2v SET

"Lo, there appeared a truly classic work: a history not majestic like Livy, nor compressed like Tacitus; not stamped with character like Clarendon; perhaps not so deep as Robertson's 'Scotland,' but a thousand degrees above his 'Charles'."
– Allibone, on Gibbon's 'History'

Originally printed in 1776, "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" was written in six volumes by Edward Gibbon. It has maintained its status as one of the most important literary achievements of the 18th-century and saw numerous editions. This book's popularity was partly due to it becoming the model used by modern historians and historical authors. This led to Gibbon being considered the first modern historian on the Roman Empire.

Important contents include:
·
Gibbon's religious, or secular, views on the Quran and Mohammed
·
The advancement of Christianity leading to the demise of Rome

Description:
Though experiencing somewhat of a critical comeback, Phebe Gibbes remains a relatively obscure author about whom little is known, despite having published a good deal in her lifetime. Her works were published anonymously, and she explained this in a letter of appeal for financial support to the Royal Literary Fund - her family "rejected every species of Literature, except devotional" and she herself was of a "withdrawing turn of temper." She claimed to be the author of several anonymous pieces; in her letter, she also enclosed an attestation by Joseph Johnson, one of her publishers, that she was the author of Elfrida, or Paternal Ambition, which had been published anonymously. Despite her withdrawing nature, Gibbes' writings were full of pronounced views on freedom of marriage choice, lack of educational opportunities for girls, women's role in society, and the evils of gambling. Indeed, the financial difficulty that led her to write to the Royal Literary Fund was due in part to her father-in-law's… Read More
