Description:
1664 1ed Oliver Cromwell Parliament Robert Pugh Attack on George Bate Elenchus

George Bate, sometimes known as Bates, was a 17th-century personal physician to Oliver Cromwell. Unfortunately, much controversy and speculation circles Bate and the untimely death of Cromwell. The controversy arises because of Bate's defense of the King's disagreements with the English Parliament, making many historians unsure who Bate sided with politically. Bate published a book entitled 'Elenchus Motuum' defending the King but it also included a thorough description of the execution of Charles I.

Robert Pugh, a Jesuit royalist, published a critical attack on 'Elenchus' – a work discussing many of Bate's medical practices, English politics, and events that would eventually lead to the Popish Plot.

Jean II le Maingre, more commonly called Boucicaut, was a 14th-century French knight known for his military prowess as the Marshal of France. In addition to his military career, he established knightly orders than defended the honor of women and promoted courtly love.
This 1697 biographical sketch of Boucicaut was written by an unknown author known simply as Pilham. This work is one of the best resources on the life of Boucicaut as well as the details of battles such as the Battle of Nicopolis and the Battle of Agincourt.

Description:
1615 Martial Epigrams Roman Literature Epigrammata Corruption in Rome Farnaby

"I live in a little cell, with a window that won't even close,
In which Boreas himself would not want to live."
– Martial, Epigrams
Martial was a 1st-century Roman poet from Spain most-known for his 'Epigrams.' This important, early piece of Roman literature expresses details of life in Rome focusing in on the brutal daily life during the Roman Empire. Martial describes living conditions of Rome, corrupt physicians and senators, cruel treatment of slaves, and secrets and rumors of emperors. Because of the style of Martial's writing, he is often considered the first insult comic, as he used humor to disguise his disdain for the life with which he was so familiar.
This 1615 London edition was edited by English classical scholar Thomas Farnaby who was known for his annotations of Juvenal, Ovid, Lucan, Virgil, and of course Martial.

Description:
1684 Tertullian Apologetics Early Church Father Pagan Gnosticism Heresy Giry

"Truth persuades by teaching, but does not teach by persuading."
― Tertullian

Tertullian was a 2nd-century early Christian church author and apologist. His works helped establish Western theology and early Church doctrine, especially those that spoke out against heresy. He is perhaps most famous for being the first Latin writer to use the term 'trinity' in reference to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Tertullian emphatically defended Christianity against pagans as well as defended 'freedom of religion' as human right unable to be taken away. One of his important apologetics was an anti-Jewish treatise to counteract Gnosticism and other philosophically based doctrines.
These defenses, along with other Tertullian works, are collected in this 1684 French edition. This edition features the translation and notes of Louis Giry.

Description:
1668 1ed Poems of Irish John Denham Coopers Hill The Sophy Destruction of Troy

John Denham was a 17th-century Irish poet. His two most famous poems were 'The Sophy' and 'Cooper's Hill', both of which are included in this 1668 first edition of his poems. 'Cooper's Hill' was the first English poem to be written specifically to provide a description of local scenery, in this case, the famed Thames Valley in Surrey. And while the work was written through the lens of the English countryside, it offers his perspective on the English Civil War and its cultural impact.

Other works included in this book include:
• 'The Destruction of Troy'
• 'On Mr Abraham Crowley'
• 'Natura Naturata'
• "On Martial's 'Epigram'"
• Many, many more
