His task he completed with marvellous success; scarcely a line remains as it was, and the general opinion has pronounced decisively in favour of the revision over the original. This is a much more formally printed account of Louis XIV's flight to Varennes, with an engraved frontispiece showing his carriages halted by a mass of soldiers. One of a collection of 40 Royalist and counter-revolutionary tracts of the French Revolution. Stock#OB1042-14. Very Good in marbled paper wrappers.

In this copy the second preliminary leaf, (a2), is bound at end; blank leaf K4, pp. 70/71, has been removed; and the last signature (*4), "Table of Heads" [i.e. index], is wanting. See Arthur Noel Kincaid's edition of the manuscript (Gloucester, Alan Sutton, 1982) for how the author's great-nephew passed a defective text as his own. Wing B5307. 1573 Ragione d'Alcune Cose Castelvetro on Annibal Caro Poetry Italian Language

Lodovico Castelvetro was a 16th-century Italian scholar who was notable for his commentary, notes, and criticisms of other authors. His commentary on Aristotle was his most famous work; however, he was highly critical of fellow Italian writer Annibal Caro. In his work 'Regione d'Alcune Cose', Castelvetro discussed the language that Caro used in his poems, criticisms that sparred debates between the two scholars.

Saint Venerable Bede was an English monk during the 7th- and 8th-centuries. He is most remembered for his ecclesiastical work on the history of English people, in which he discusses the establishment and growth of the church throughout the known world. He also wrote important commentaries on the books of the Bible. This work explains relevant Biblical passages, as well as describes the allegorical notes of Church Fathers. However, he did not write exclusively of church theology. He also wrote on the development of time and ideas of cosmology.

Peter Apian was a 16th-century humanist who is remembered for his studies in astronomy and mathematics. One of his best known works was his 1534 mathematics treatise 'Instrumentum Primi Mobilis'. This book was Apian's studies in trigonometry, and, according to Tomash & Williams,
"Apian published a table of sines that, for the first time, was based on a circle with a radius of a power of ten, in this case one hundred thousand. The values of the functions were thus decimal and were easily adapted to any situation in which the defining circle was a decimal power."
This 1534 first edition is exceedingly rare and valuable. It contains the expected sine charts as well as numerous woodcut illustrations depicting protractor and arc readings. Note that this incredible work includes the original title page, which features a woodcut after Albrecht Durer.

Johann Pistorius was a 16th-century historian who published a number of anti-Protestant works each of which demonstrated his knowledge of his despised theological opponents such as Martin Luther. One of his rather unknown works was his collection of the works of medieval chroniclers including the works of Marianus Scotus, Sigebertus of Gembloux, Lambert of Hersfeld, Roberti de Monte (Torigni), and Hermannus Contractus of Reichenau all of whom were known to chronicle the history of Germany and Germanic tribes.
This enormous two-volume set of vellum-bound folios is a stunning display – truly remarkable!
