An attractive copy with no loss and the last to be published during his lifetime. Joe Wilmot and his wife Elizabeth own a small movie house. Not being particularly fond of her husband, when Elizabeth catches Joe kissing another woman, she tells him that she is willing to "disappear" if Joe agrees to pay her $25,000. The three decide they will murder a stranger, leave the woman's body in Joe's garage, set the garage on fire, and then, pretending that the dead woman is Elizabeth, collect the $25,000 from the insurance company. This is a tale of fraud, murder, and adultery ... a powerful tale of suspense that leads to a shuddering, disturbing conclusion.

There is a stamp on the front pastedown from a book & library service, a scuff on the front free end paper from sticker removal, and a typewritten blurb glued to the rear free end paper. No other library indications. The spine ends are bumped with a bit of rubbing to the edges of the green boards. Light tape residue to the boards and end papers where an old jacket protector had been attached. Previous owner's name stamped on the front pastedown. The binding is square and solid. The jacket has internal stiff paper reinforcement to the spine and flap folds as well as the upper and lower edges. Jacket is rubbed with small chips at the corners and spine ends, flaps are corner clipped with a crease to the rear flap, in newer mylar. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. This Dell paperback is difficult to find in fine condition. Joe Wilmot and his wife Elisabeth jointly own and run a profitable smalltown movie house. Their marriage is empty and passionless and made more complicated when Carol Farmer, a business student, comes to live with them. Despite Carol's unattractiveness, Joe has an affair with her. Elisabeth discovers the affair and blackmails the couple to fix an insurance scam in which she supposedly dies (substituting an innocent victim in her place) and nets the lucrative pay-off. Murder, arson, blackmail and suicide combine to make an exciting thriller. A difficult title from an important writer.
